Chapter 1
I stood outside of the British Library in St. James Square and marveled at my surroundings. A trip to London was never something I imagined that I would be doing. Brody was more than understanding about my leaving the country to research my family history. I felt nervous as I headed inside the library. I didn’t really know what I was looking for or where to start. All I knew was that I needed answers. After my great, great aunt died and her children died I was left with only the memories of my great grandmother, grandmother and my mother. I headed inside determined to find out what strange oddities plagued my family history. Brianna was a clairvoyant just as my grandmother was and that was enough for me to know that there were some secrets within my family. I intended to uncover them all.
Sitting in front of a computer I began to dig through public records and old newspaper clippings. I was surprised to see that there had been a rash of unsolved murders in London recently. I hoped there wasn’t another blood thirsty vampire on the loose. After all that had happened in Georgetown, I wasn’t prepared to go through any of that again. I focused my search back to my family. Apparently the Meadows family was well known in London. It seems my family owned a psychic shop that closed down due to a fire. A fire that only my grandmother had escaped alive. I knew nothing of what I was reading. I scanned a few more articles and came across the names of some of my supposed long lost relatives. I wrote down each name and their last known address. I was determined to track down whoever was alive or anyone who knew them. Family was everything to me and it seemed like my mother had left out quite a few relatives when she told me about our kin.
My cellphone rang and I smiled when I saw Brody’s name and face on the screen.
How’s it going, babe?
Brody asked.
So far so good. I have some names and old addresses that I am going to check into. How’s our baby girl?
She misses her mommy. She had a nightmare about a man with glowing eyes last night. She woke up screaming.
I’m so sorry I wasn’t there for her,
I said sadly.
She’s fine now so don’t worry. We just want you back home safely and as soon as possible.
I’ll be home before you know it, love.
Call me when you get back to the hotel.
I will, sweetheart,
I said and hung up.
I hated hearing that Brianna had a nightmare. Especially when I knew exactly who the dream was about. I didn’t dare say or think his name for fear he might hear me. I was very aware that my former love was capable of extreme stealth. I tucked the paper I had written on in my purse and decided to check out the site of my family’s old store. The article I read said the building was still intact after the fire. It was a start as far as I was concerned. I headed outside to a waiting taxi. I had no idea how to get around in this strange town. Everything looked weird to me. Georgetown was all I had ever known. Now here I was in another country. It was like a dream come true to me. The taxi ride was long and the route was picturesque. When the taxi finally stopped in front of an old abandoned building, I knew we had arrived at our destination. I paid the taxi driver more money to wait for me. I walked over to the building and peered into the dirty front window. Everything was dark inside. I looked up at the top of the building and saw a partial sign hanging there.
Meadows Family Fortunes,
I read aloud.
I couldn’t make out the rest of the sign because the words were missing. I walked around to the back of the building. Debris was scattered about and a stray cat hung out by a back door. I walked over to the door and turned the handle. To my surprise the door was unlocked. I walked inside cautiously. I felt like since it was my family’s business I had every right to be here. I pulled out my cellphone and turned on the flashlight. The place seemed to be preserved pretty well. I could see damage from the fire but most of the damage appeared to be caused by time. The floorboards were rotting and the wallpaper peeling. There wasn’t much furniture left but there was a cabinet and a desk off in a corner. I made my way towards the cabinet. It was very old and smelled musty. There were a few books stacked up on it. I picked up one of the books and dusted it off. I found it odd that the book was so well preserved. I browsed through the book and it appeared to be a diary. Being a connoisseur of old books I knew this diary was at least a hundred years old. The leather was bound rather than glued like newer books.
What are you doing in here?
a voice with a strong English accent asked from behind me.
Startled, I jumped and the book fell to the floor. I turned my light towards the voice and saw a woman standing there. The woman’s face looked old and weathered. Her eyes fixated on my face.
My family used to own this place. I’m Asia Johnson, formerly Asia Meadows.
The woman stared but didn’t say anything more. She shielded her eyes from my flashlight.
Do you know if anyone still owns this building?
I asked the woman.
You shouldn’t be in here snooping,
the woman scolded me.
I’m looking for my relatives, not snooping. Why are you here?
The woman frowned and walked out the back door. I picked up the book and quickly followed the woman outside. I adjusted my eyes to the sunlight and looked around for the woman but she was gone.
Are you alright?
the taxi driver asked as he appeared from around the building.
I’m fine, did you see the old woman who was here?
I didn’t see anyone. I just came to see if you were alright.
There was an old woman who just left out. She told me I shouldn’t be here.
I’m sorry Miss but I didn’t see anyone.
I shook my head and walked with the taxi driver back to the taxi. I was puzzled as to how he hadn’t seen the old woman. I had seen her as plain as day. Inside the taxi I examined the diary closely. A picture was sticking out from one of the pages. I turned to it and looked at it closely. The photo was faded but I could make out my great grandmother and a woman who could have been my great grandmother’s twin. I was never told that my great grandmother had a sister so I assumed it was a friend in the picture. They were standing in front of the building I had just left. I flipped through the diary and read a few pages. The writing was very cryptic. I had no clue as to who had written it. There were no names mentioned on the pages I read or in the front of the diary.
The diary seemed to be random thoughts and memories. It was weird but I decided I would go over it more closely when I got back to the hotel. I informed the driver of our next destination. I wanted to check out the addresses I found. The first one led me to a house in a secluded area of town. There were no cars in the driveway as we pulled up. I got out and walked up to the front door. I grabbed the brass knocker and tapped it on the door. I heard movement from inside and saw someone peek from behind a curtain in a window.
Just a moment,
a meek voice said from behind the door.
I stepped back and waited for the door to open. A few minutes later the large wooden door swung open.
