    Fog lay across the horizon like cotton batting, a layer between the gray sky and the gray Potomac River. Margaret Day shivered in the chill left overnight by the seasonal battle, adjusting her woolen Spencer coat. March was always cantankerous like this, winter not ready to give up yet and spring ready to move in.

    She glanced down at the trousers she'd had to wear by necessity and wondered how men managed without all the extra layers in the colder weather. She kept thinking she'd lost one of her petticoats.

    But the cold brightened the scents of the stone dust lingering the air, making her stone magic squirm with excitement. Bluestone gneiss and granite were solid, working stone good for stability. Marble was the prissy ballerina, wanting to show off.
