PROLOGUE
As I open my eyes on this beautiful June morning I feel very peaceful and happy. Maybe it’s because I’m in a hotel room overlooking Niagara Falls and I’m not alone. I roll over and Matt is beside me. I watch him sleeping and listen to his soft breathing. I feel wonderful and so desired by this beautiful man. Just being close to him gives me a warm feeling inside and I hope it never ends. I never expected to feel this way again since I lost Joe and my world turned very dark and lonely, but here I am with Matt. I think I’ll try to get up without disturbing this angel beside me. As I slowly roll over I stop and listen to hear the soft breathing and I know that Matt is still asleep. I head into the bathroom and while washing my hands with the fancy vanilla foam soap, (I love the smell of nice soaps), I spot a bottle of mouthwash on the sink. This would be an excellent idea to get rid of what I call jungle mouth. I pour a little of the green liquid into a paper cup and swish it around my mouth. Boy! That feels a lot better. Now I will try to sneak back into bed without waking Matt.
I’m now in bed beside Matt and suddenly a warm arm is across my abdomen. He just put his arm around me and I love the feeling. I think he is still asleep but I welcome the advance. As I start to drift off again I can feel fingers massaging my left hip. I have to say it feels pretty good. Sleeping alone, as I usually do, is not fun. Waking up with someone you love has a much higher rating with me. I dream, often, about times like this but this time it is reality and not just a dream.
A couple of short minutes later I feel Matt taking my right hand. I squeeze his fingers to show my approval. We lie in peace for a few moments and then Matt rolls over and gives me a kiss on the cheek. I can only reach his forehead but I return his kiss.
Again we lie quietly, slowly waking from a good night’s rest. Last evening we went to the theatre to see a play. It was excellent but we were tired when we returned to the hotel. A happy tired I must admit.
Now Matt is sitting up and he leans over and plants a big kiss on my lips. Thank goodness for the mouthwash, wouldn’t want him to experience my jungle mouth. I feel confident enough to kiss him back. Now his hands are exploring other parts of my body. He feels so warm and his touch is soft. Keep going my sweetheart, I hope you never stop I think to myself. Matt is an excellent lover never forgetting the importance of foreplay. As we lie in each other’s arms he slowly kisses my left breast, then the right. This is starting to feel very exciting to me.
I start massaging his back and chest and he seems to be responding to my touch. His hand is now down below. I am so ready for him and I guess he knows this as he is soon inside me.
I can’t express how wonderful it makes me feel to wake up to such a beautiful man making love with me. I don’t deserve the two wonderful men I have had in my life when some people don’t even have one. What have I done to deserve this? We lie here in bed for a while just enjoying being together.
By ten o’clock we decide we had better get up as check out is at 11.
Maggie, would you like to take the first shower? I know you need time to dry your hair and I’m fairly quick.
Thanks I’ll go in now. I would like to style my hair before we go home especially since we are stopping at that fancy Italian restaurant for lunch. I’m looking forward to visiting that new restaurant. It just opened a month ago and the reviews are terrific.
We arrive at Marcello’s Classic Italian Ristorante and it is just 1 o’clock. We enjoy a delicious lunch of cheese ravioli, a salad and fruit for dessert. Italians often eat their salad after the main dish but we have them together as is more a Canadian custom. Then we drive home.
CHAPTER 1
I am just waking up and the early morning sun is shining directly into my eyes. It’s the middle of July and I had forgotten to close the blinds last night. These sheer curtains don’t keep the sun out. As I roll over and almost on top of Pepper, I see the clock on my night stand. It’s only five past seven Oh well, I like to get up early anyway and get my day under way.
After I feed Pepper and her kitten Cocoa I have my usual breakfast of orange juice and toast, and I am just enjoying my coffee and watching the cats play with a ball on the kitchen floor. They seem to like it as there is a bell inside and it makes a noise when they push it around. The news is on television in my kitchen and the weatherman says sunny skies and no rain today. We have had rain for the past three days so I want to take advantage of the lovely summer weather.
What can I do outside today? Maybe a walk in the park.
I am speaking out loud because maybe the cats will know what I am saying and maybe not, but nonetheless I talk. (Crazy cat lady possibly.)
I think I’ll call Matt and see if he would like to join me. It’s only eight o’clock but I know Matt gets up around seven so I’ll give him a call.
Good morning Matt. How are you today?
I ask and wait to hear his sexy voice on the other end of the line. I wait patiently, or not so patiently, for him to answer. My heart always skips a beat when I first hear his voice.
Oh, Maggie dear I’m just fine. How are you?
Matt answers. I always love to talk to him in the early morning as it gets my day off to a good start.
Great,
I say. I’m thinking of taking a walk in the park this morning. Would you care to join me?
I’d love to join you but I have an appointment with my financial advisor this morning so I’m sorry but I have to decline. Maybe next time though. Thanks for asking. How about dinner tonight?
I’d love that. Is five o’clock okay with you?
Sure, I thought maybe the Chicken House?
It’s been a while since we have eaten there and I know we both enjoy it," Matt commented.
Good choice. See you at five.
As I return to my coffee, which incidentally is now cold, I am planning where to start my walk as there are several entrances to the park. After I pour myself a fresh cup of hot coffee I decide to take the route leading down by the river. That route is a little longer than the others and I would like to be outside a while longer today in the sunshine. I have been cooped up for the last few days with no sun in sight, only rain. I need to be outside for as long as possible today.
I’ll put on lots of insect repellent and SPF 30 sunscreen today as I am wearing shorts and a tee shirt. It seems if there is one mosquito in the area it will find me and then go back and invite its friends to join the feast. I also grab a cap, my white baseball cap that I bought on our last trip down south, to protect my head from the burning sun, clip my cell phone to my belt and head outside. I have decided to drive to the park as it is a fair distance and I want to save my energy to walk along the riverbank. As I pull into the parking lot at the park I glance at the clock on my dashboard and it tells me that it is just nine o’clock. What a beautiful day. I’m glad to be alive and healthy enough to enjoy a walk in the park. Although my thoughts are not entirely on the walk I am about to take. Matt has invited me to dinner so obviously I’m going over my wardrobe for tonight. I always strive to look nice when I’m going out with Matt as he always looks spectacular.
I’m about one hour into my walk and I have been walking along the riverbank for about half an hour now. Should I wear my red sundress or maybe my new blue one? I’m afraid I’m not paying too much attention to the surrounding area when something metallic catches my eye. The sun has hit it and it is now blinding me. As I look up I can see what looks like a silver coloured water bottle glistening in the sun. I gingerly enter the wooded area to see what it is. Maybe I’m just nosey, but then I see the body of a girl, badly beaten, lying behind some shrubs. I approach her carefully and check around me now to make sure we are alone. The young girl is unconscious but when I check her pulse she is alive. I’m glad I brought my cell phone today as sometimes I have been known to forget it. I immediately call 911 and then I cover the girl with the jacket I had tied around my waist just in case the mosquitoes were particularly bad. I really don’t think there is much else I can do to help her so I’ll just guard her until the paramedics arrive. There is an access road along the river so help arrives in about five minutes. When the paramedics examine this young woman they find that her clothes are damp as if she has been here all night. The ground is still wet from all the rain we have had lately. She has been sexually assaulted and very badly beaten. They figure she must have put up quite a fight with her abuser. She has cuts and scrapes on her arms and face and what looks like a bruise forming from a very tight hand grip on her neck. After oxygen is administered and nasal prongs in place she is taken by stretcher to the standby ambulance.
What hospital are you taking her to? I would like to check on her a little later.
We will go to the local hospital and it will be up to them to transfer her for further care as they see fit,
said the paramedic riding with her in the ambulance.
Thank you,
I responded. As the ambulance pulled away I could feel a lump in my throat. This girl is all alone and in serious condition. She has started to regain consciousness with the administration of the oxygen. I would feel very abandoned if it were me so I will visit her as soon as possible. I hope she will be okay. I know she is going to need a lot of care including psychiatric counselling for the rape. I trust she has some identification on her as I can’t find a purse here at the scene. I’m going to stay a little longer and search the surrounding area for a purse but if she was out running, as I suspect, she wouldn’t be carrying a purse.
After a quick search of the grounds I cut short my walk and return home as quickly as possible. I’m shaking like a leaf as I enter my front door. I’m going to change into something more presentable and then go to the hospital to check on the patient. I put on my white pants and a blue blouse but I am still shaking from the shock of this morning. I think I had better sit for few minutes and calm down before I visit the hospital. I won’t be any good to anyone else in this present condition. Maybe a cup of herb tea would help, I’m thinking, so I make myself a chamomile tea. I’m very concerned about this young woman as she was badly beaten and her face looks a mess from all the cuts and bruises.
It’s almost lunch time but I think I’ll just get a muffin when I’m at the hospital. I don’t want to waste too much time as they may transfer her to another facility for treatment and I would miss seeing her. The hospital does not have to give me any information concerning her whereabouts as I am not family.
When I arrive at our local hospital I am directed to the Emergency Dept. where doctors and nurses are still working on her. They have her hooked up to oxygen and an I.V. is running in her left arm. She looks so small and fragile and very much alone. She arrived with no identification on her and nobody knows who she is. I speak to the nurse at the desk and get permission to try to talk to her as the doctors are just finishing up with their examination. Apparently she won’t talk to anyone even though she has been fully conscious since her arrival in the Emergency Dept. I think she must be terrified as I know I would be in her situation. She probably doesn’t know who she can trust, so she is trusting nobody.
I enter her cubicle after the doctors and nurses leave. I close the curtain to give us a little privacy so as to encourage her to talk to me but she turns her head away in hopes of discouraging me. I know I have to try to help this girl, so I persist.
Good afternoon. I’m Maggie and I’m the lady who found you this morning.
I whisper softly into her ear.
What is your name?
I ask and then patiently wait for her to answer.
There is no answer and this lovely young lady is just lying on the very uncomfortable bed in Emerg. There is a lot of activity in this department today and people moaning and groaning and babies crying. I’m sure she is frightened out of her mind and not wanting to give any information to anyone. How can I help her? My mind is racing and coming up with all sorts of answers but none of them are practical as I can’t even get her name.
I lean over her bed a little so she can see my face around all the equipment that she is hooked up to. I’ll try again.
I’m your friend: I’m the lady who found you this morning and called for help to get you to the hospital, so you can trust me. I just want to help you. Will you tell me your name?
I plead.
She looks at me very intently as if she was studying my face.
