    About the author

After a typical African childhood of walking barefoot and swimming in open rivers, he became one of the world’s best journalists and held a stint in one of Africa’s biggest dailies before quitting to build a career as a story-teller.

    Prologue

Even for a five year old, David Lyon could tell this was the end.

He had waited for his dad, his hero in every way, to bail him out as he had never failed to do. But that wasn’t to be. Five feet under water, and after he had battled with all he had to get a breath of air without success, he couldn’t do any more as water filled up his stomach, his lungs and, finally, his brain gave the signal to die.

    Chapter One

It was a horrible end to a sweet short life.

But David wasn’t one to just die. His soul was instantly removed from his dead body and he took just one last quick look at the body that he knew he will never use again and began his journey to immortality. He could see his grandmother who he was with at the farm before his unfortunate slip and plunge into the river still unaware of the development.

He had to hurry before she could find out and trap his soul with her mourning. David loved his gran; he always insisted on heading out to the country every school holiday to be with her. He loved the wide open spaces, his dog, and his village buddies who revered him as opposed to the town ones where he was just but an equal.

As he rose, he turned to see his father in town. He was such a wonderful man to him. He only seemed to care about the happiness of his family. While he wasn’t rich, he did enough for them to be comfortable. Now looking down from the other side of life, he could see a worried man who cared to the point of depression.

At that particular moment, he was praying for David. His soul had tied to his son’s and he was aware of something that had happened. He was nothing like the super hero David had always imagined him to be as he crouched on his knees and cried for his son to be okay.

David knew his death would devastate him. But he couldn’t go back now to be with him. The scene around him had started to transform to a starry paradise that was immensely impressive even to his young soul. But he still had to see his mum before he disappeared.

Such a beautiful mother Ann was! Even now as she toiled to support his father in meeting the demands of a growing family, she was as graceful as ever. She still was totally clueless and David didn’t want to be able to see the moment she would find out.

Throngs of angels were now singing and dancing around David and he could only catch a glimpse of Cess, his sister and apple of his eye. He had waited too long to be a brother and she didn’t disappoint when she arrived.

The little girl was so beautiful she looked like a doll. She took to David as soon as she could know. In return, he treasured her with all his self. She was one who will not know, being only a year and two months old. David was sad to see the view of the world disappear into the distance as the angels, still singing and celebrating guided him farther into the heavens.

Suddenly, there was an explosion of light and David found himself on what seemed like the edge of a paradise. On the one side, he could see an expanse of gold paved walkways, glittering trees with leaves of silver and flowers of gems and diamonds.

The grass was a perfect green without a blade
