    Casting Off

    Captain Smedley welcomed the Keen Teens to his vessel, the sloop Dolly Maude and launched into an indoctrination lecture on seamanship to prepare them for the coming cruise.

    He pointed to the sheets, harrumphed, and in his best nautical stance, explained their function.

    Now this rope here...this is not a rope. Therefore, it must be a sheet. Yes, yes, it looks like a rope. Well in a sense it is. It might even be called a line if you please. That, howsoever, would not be substantially correct. Mark this now. It is a sheet. The two lines forward are jib sheets. This one I'm holding is the main sheet.

    He waved the rope jauntily, and the Keen Teens followed its twisting flight with bright-eyed wonder, their hungry minds feasting on the clarity of Capt. Smedley’s exposition.

    The rope whipped back, knocking the captains SORC-approved yachting cap into the oily harbor.

    Goodness, exclaimed Kippi.

    Gracious echoed Suzy.
