About the Author
Discovering Hope
Ihope you can be… discreet."
Nicole shifted in the stiff-backed leather chair, the cloth from her black slacks catching while her boss, the Creative Director and CEO of Orbit Games, the cold icicle himself, Alex Parker, in that perfectly pressed thousand dollar suit, remained unmoved.
This, this couldn’t be happening.
She licked her lips. Sir, I’m not sure I understand.
What isn’t to understand?
That Fire Storm had been a sure bet. That it was supposed to be a money-maker which Orbit itself and not some money-grabbing publisher had financed. That Alex had practically promised it’s success.
She forced herself not to grab her turquoise, shell-beaded bracelet. To fidget. Not while Alex sat there.
Waiting. Cool. Composed. Completely untouched by the impact what this news actually meant for his employees. For her team.
It’s just that, with all those changes you wanted made to the gameplay, the map system, all those overtime hours the team put in…
Her fingers snuck closer to her bracelet.
Yes?
The truth caught in her throat. Lodged there. Unable to escape. She’d watched families hurt by the long work demands Orbit had made on her team. And they’d all done it, all of them, with the promise that it’d be worth it.
She ran a hand across her forehead.
Somehow, she wasn’t sweating. Somehow, she was still breathing. Still in control. But not really.
The truth,
Alex said, is that all those long hours were a waste of the company’s money.
Nicole shifted again. The squeeze-slide of leather sticking echoed in the darkened, unadorned yet perfectly polished office. From the man-sized glass windows overlooking Lake Washington and the further off glowing downtown Seattle skyline to Alex’s gleaming, imported wood desk she looked out of place.
Felt out of place.
And this news, this news made it even worse.
Alex didn’t move an inch. Not even the slight crease or pull from his coal-colored suit as he, again, repeated: Your game failed.
Failed.
Her game.
Now it was her turn not to move, not to even breathe. If she did she might do something she’d regret.
Like cry.
Or punch the asshole.
Because that’s what came next after the ice-cold shock.
