The Beast Master - Michael Lee Ables Jr.

Chapter One

Jason watched as the sword came down but halted when a bright light filled the room. His mom appeared and stood with Helen and the girls.

What are you doing!? he screamed. Helen burst into flames, rushing forward. Seth jumped up and landed on the balcony. Immediately, the girls helped Aria up.

They then watched as Seth laughed. You lost your only hope, Seth said with the sword in his hands.

I wouldn’t be so sure, Aria retorted.  How long have you been holding that sword? The sword started to glow.  You see, only the brothers can wield the sword, she pointed out.

Seth screamed and tried to throw it, but the sword’s glow became more intense. Moments later, the sword fell to the ground with a shower of dust.  The generals stopped dead in their tracks and exchanged looks.

Sara then healed the brothers one by one. Jason got on his feet and picked up the sword.

It’s over! he declared.

A tall woman jumped upon a pedestal. You have no idea, Brother, she countered. Seth was just one of many warriors.  Soon, you will meet the next.

One after another, the generals disappeared. Jason looked at his mom and his small army.

Round one to us, he said.  He then hugged his mom and Helen. Let’s go home.

Out on the porch of his mom’s house, Jason watched as Sam got on the school bus.

A penny for your thoughts, a voice broke the silence. He looked over at his mom and took a sip of his coffee. She came close taking his cup. Oh, how I miss coffee, Sara said handing it back to him.

Since you’re here, there must be a new threat, Jason said.

She smiled. Not yet. There’s some talk. Come on. He followed her to the basement. She grabbed a book from a shelf.

I don’t think you should wait; you and Sam should attack the dark while they regroup, she said while handing him one of his father’s journals. He looked down the list. There’s talk that the Beastmaster will take Seth’s place. She hugged him tightly.  He will be very dangerous and has many evil things at his command. She backed off and started to glow.  I will always be with you. She blew him a kiss and then disappeared.

Sam came home from school and tossed his bag on the floor.

I’d rather fight, he said, unzipping his bag, then he pulled out a paper, which he handed to Jason.

Jason took it and read through the note. They have to be kidding.

Sam shook his head. I missed too much school. They said there’s no excuse.  Apparently, saving the world doesn’t count. He said sarcastically.

Jason watched as his brother ran upstairs.  He then picked up the phone and called work.

Hi, Susan. I need to use some of my vacation days. Sam is in trouble in school, and I have to attend some meetings.  There was some silence.  Hello, are you there?

I’m sorry, Jason, I need someone here to do the work. This place is a mess.  If you don’t come tomorrow, then don’t bother coming back. The phone clicked. Jason cursed under his breath. He sat down looking around.

What am I going to do? he asked himself.

Helen came out of the kitchen. What’s wrong? she asked handing him a cup of tea.

Sam’s school wants me to attend some meeting, because of the school he missed. He took a drink.  But work won’t give me the time off: if I don’t show up to work tomorrow, I will lose my job.

Helen turned back to the kitchen. Why work?  There’s plenty of money in the bank. Remember? She handed him a bank book. She smiled at him as he looked up, astonished at the amount of money his family had accrued over the years. He stood up and grabbed his coat. Where are you going? Helen asked.

I’m going to get my stuff.

She watched as he climbed into the car and zoomed off.

Jason put his things in a box.

Why are you doing this? Susan asked. He turned to face her.

Sam is more important. I don’t need this. He picked up his box. Someone else can teach these dummies how to use their email. He passed her going to the elevator.

It doesn’t matter, does it, Jason?  The end of times is upon us! she yelled.  He turned around looking at her.

Chapter Two

She glared at him, letting her hands snap to her side.  Her ears elongated and became pointed, her fingers cracked, and her nails became claws. Her eyes then turned glowing red.

Seth was a weakling. My master won’t have any sympathy for you brothers.  That’s why he sent me. She charged at him, clawing at his raised arm. He kicked her back, pulling a knife out of his boot. He let the power rush through him.  The knife glowed as she backed off. She growled, lunging toward him again. She hit him in the chest, knocking the air out of him. His knife went flying a few feet away.  She pinned him down, leaning in and licking his lips. Maybe I should have some fun; strong blood runs through your veins. We’d make a powerful child. He struggled, trying to get away.  There was a pop behind them. Megan grabbed her by the hair and pulled her off him.  She pushed her sword into her, twisting.  She then withdrew it and slung off the blood. Susan hit her knees.

She turned as Jason walked up taking the sword. Sam stood to the side with an open portal with Helen. Jason reached into his pocket and pulled out a piece of rope with a purple stone. He bent down and slipped it over her head. They all watched as she fell asleep. How did you know I was in trouble?

Sam turned to show the claw marks on his back. I was attacked checking the mail, he said.

Helen crouched looking at Susan. We should get her back; Susan needs healing.

Jason watched as his mom healed Susan.

I don’t understand why you’re bothering. You should be leaving. These attacks are only the beginning, she said as she finished and stood.  Susan slowly opened her eyes and pulled at the chains.  They glowed green, and a sizzle filled the air.  The woman screamed and hit her knees.

I wouldn’t do that unless you want a shock. Jason said.

I’m not going back to the cave, Sam said.  I can’t!  Trish wrapped her arm around his. We can supplement the house’s protection; they could use magic against us. He then turned to Susan.  I’ve worked there two years, Jason said.

Susan smiled standing still. We're not stupid. My master has been watching you for a very long time, she said.  "By dusk, this house will be nothing but splinters and
