Oversight - R. D. Scott
Chapter 1
It was the day before Thanksgiving, one of my favorite holidays, because I could eat to my hearts content without fear of embarrassing remarks by my friends and family. I was in my kitchen supervising(bothering) my housekeeper as she was preparing for the meal she was going to cook in the morning. Obviously she did not feel that she needed any supervising(bothering), because she handed me a cup of coffee and suggested I join my daughter in the library. I have, through trial and error, learned when it was a good time to depart, so I made my way toward Brenda, my fifteen year old daughter, cup in hand.
My name is Gary Sutton and I'm a consultant for the Atlanta Police Department. I'm also married to Captain Beth (Holder) Sutton, head of Special Investigations, an intelligent and formidable woman. I have what is known as post cognition, a 'talent' that allows me to see memories when I touch someone or something. As a result of that 'talent' I had actually been close to being a recluse, accidentally touching people or things they've touched was distracting, I was constantly being bombarded with images of their lives. I had in self-defense developed a routine that included minimum contact, specifically, if I had to go out I usually wore elastic gloves as a barrier. That was until I met Beth, back then a Lieutenant for the police department, at a crime scene where I was a witness.
I had over the previous eight years spent my mornings reading financial newspapers, drinking coffee and having breakfast at the same place, Dale's Cafe, and that's where the world intruded back into my life, that was the crime scene. Someone had chosen my breakfast spot for an assassination. The investigation team was led by Lieutenant Beth Holder, there personally investigating because one of the shooting victims was her boss Chief Robert Walker and she was determined to conclude the case as quickly as possible.
I got involved in the case because I was able prove to her that I could see some information Beth needed to help solve her case. When a possible threat to my life occurred she spent a few nights in my house after the Chief of Detectives had placed me under her protection. One thing led to another, we fell in love, she moved in with me and I was able at the same time to work with her using my 'talent' to help solve cases.
Brenda, my daughter, came into my life about nine months ago when I found out for the first time that I had a child, much less one that was a teenager. Her biological mother had abandoned her at age two months, leaving her with grandparents and disappearing, and when they unexpectedly died after four years, Brenda was orphaned.
She spent the next nine years in the foster system and I discovered her by accident. She was brought to County Hospital in an unresponsive state after being assaulted. I had been asked by Beth, my new roommate and wrestling partner, to try and discover who she was and what had happened. The surprise of finding a daughter I never knew I had caused me to pass out when I touched her. Over the next two days a succession of events occurred, I was able through use of caring and compassion to bring Brenda back awake, Beth and I emotionally bonded with her, and I decided there was no way she was going to return to Social Services and the foster care system. After a brilliant suggestion from Beth to use a friendship with the head of Psychiatry and some administrative details at the hospital, I was able to bring her home with me and we became a family.
Thanksgiving holiday from school began yesterday afternoon for her, but I found her at my desk working on the computer as if she needed to complete a homework assignment, there were pages printing and she was typing as fast as I have ever seen. Being the curious type(nosy), I picked up the sheets in the printer and began reading. I discovered that it wasn't homework, it was some type of police file and knowing that Beth would not exclude me from one of her cases, it meant my daughter was being sneaky about something. She was a computer geek (prodigy) and had in fact helped out on two previous cases by her uncanny ability to search through files to find needed information, even though the searches were sometimes quasi-legal.
My mind kicked into overdrive, there was a mystery occurring and I was not a part of it and since rediscovering the world a year and a half ago, I found that I enjoyed solving mysteries. The good news for me was that, unlike other fathers, finding out what was happening was as simple as walking behind Brenda and grabbing her ear, and the images began to flow.
Dad!
she exclaimed in a startled tone. Are you spying on me again? You know all you have to do is ask and I'll tell you what I'm doing. Besides, I was about to show you those printouts and ask your opinion about the discovery I made.
It sounded like a convenient excuse, but in this case I still had her ear and she was in fact about to tell me.
I leaned forward and placed a kiss on the ear in question and apologized for my intrusion, then whispered that the FBI and NCIC might have additional information in her less than legal search.
It's almost time for your Mother to get home, why not wait to explain until we can both listen and you can get her opinion along with mine.
I caught the wince on her face when she heard the words, mother and explain.
I then gave her a big hug as I remembered again how she had come into my life and how wonderful being a family felt, especially since I had been shanghaied into marriage two months ago. (I will always pretend to have been forced).
While I was reminiscing about the wedding and the subsequent honeymoon, and sipping on my coffee, she continued her research. After a while I heard Beth come in the front door and I loudly said Hi
, so that she would know we were in the library. She yelled back to come into the kitchen, she had brought Chinese home for dinner and she was not going to wait on us. That was my angel, as bossy and lovable as always.
By the time we reached the kitchen the Chinese was opened and ready to eat, matter of fact she was already eating. Talia, our housekeeper, had finished the holiday preparation and at Brenda's insistence sat down with us for some dinner. She was a recognized part of our family and liked taking care of us, adored Brenda and Beth, and tolerated me.
And how was your day, my sweet and loving wife?
I asked Beth, knowing that she would suspect an ulterior motive in my obviously gooey question, she always suspected the worst from me, I don't know why, I'm a very stalwart fellow.
Actually, it was slow enough for me to get through all the paperwork that has backed up. But, the bigger question is, why am I sweet and loving?
She then immediately turned to Brenda. Or are you in some kind of trouble and he's covering for you? I don't know who's worse, you or him.
Nobody's in trouble,
she giggled. we're just glad you're home because we love you and missed you.
That innocent comment was so patently deflecting I winced, waiting for the rebuttal, and even Talia smiled knowingly. It was so innocent that Beth put down her chopsticks, leaned back in her chair, crossed her arms, and asked what was going on. Were we about to get raided by agents for violation of some Federal law? She asked that question because on two previous cases Brenda had the occasion to hunt through restricted computer programs to help solve the mystery, which is why I categorized her searches as quasi-legal.
I am not the most diplomatic person, I have in the past been labeled a trouble maker, so I jumped in with an attitude Beth has become used to hearing, namely to give useful information while picking on or blaming someone else.
Brenda was going to confess to her latest foray into criminal behavior, but I asked her to wait for you, that way you could maybe resolve her difficulty before it became a crisis.
I honestly stated as I scooped fried rice into my mouth.
