Reva, I need you to find me this boy, Laveau,
Mama said.
Why this boy? Why now?
I asked.
Not now. I need you to go back about thirty years. The eighties should be about right. You need to find him when he's young enough not to question you. He’ll still be in Louisiana. I have my reasons why. We have a special gift. We can travel in time. Gifts come with responsibility.
I know that Mama, but--
Don't you interrupt me girl. It is our responsibility to help. Small nudges, little gifts. These things will have a favorable outcome. That being said, this boy will be the first one you help. Nothing major, just a delivery. But, the impact it will have will bring great change.
But, Mama is he going to defeat someone or change history?
That is not for me to tell you. Quite frankly, it's none of your business. That is his path. For now, we just need to facilitate his learning process. Be careful. There are some that don’t want him to gain this knowledge. They are insignificant in the grand scheme of things.
I’ll stay on my toes. You want me to give the boy a stone and set him free?
You're getting it now. See, I knew that I raised a smart girl.
I was surprised that Mama trusted me with a risky mission. She usually wanted me safe at home. I had been waiting for the opportunity to take on more responsibility for a long time. Thanks to Mama, I could travel by fire. Well, not so much thanks to her. She didn't invent it. She gave me the bloodstone that enables me to travel. This wouldn’t be my first time, but it still made me nervous.
I had everything ready on the tiny patch of sand behind my house that I called my private beach. A stone circle that was always ready for my travels. The firewood and kindling were already set up. I lit a small fire, no need to make a big mess. I watched it burn for a few minutes. I had gotten used to the smoke, but I hated how the sooty smell lingered in my hair.
It's so crazy how this works. It really shouldn't work at all. I have a theory. I think it’s not so much the act of the fire, but more the temperature of the fire reacting with some aspect of the bloodstone. I haven’t figured out a way to test this theory. Mama won't tell me if I’m right or wrong. I'm sure that she knows. She always knows.
I stepped into the fire with my eyes closed as I had every other time. I slowly lowered myself until I was seated. I opened my
