Conclusion
Introduction: Peaceful, Cozy Living
How does the prospect of having a peaceful life sound? To many, this is the ideal way to live, and yet it appears to be so far out of our reach that we believe that it is unattainable.
Instead of peace, we find ourselves consumed with the frenetic pace of modern life. We allow ourselves to be caught up in social media, obsessed with our to-do lists, stuck in traffic on a constant basis, and then when we get home, we just want to collapse in bed. The worst part is having to repeat the same process the following day.
This is hardly peaceful.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. Instead, we can turn to the Danish way of life and learn from their habits and the ways in which they bring a sense of cozy and comfortable living that is largely free from the stresses and strains that we tend to place upon ourselves. It’s a way of life that results in you making your life relatively simple in order to enjoy the things around you.
This way of life is called hygge.
Throughout this book, we are going to explore not only the origins of the hygge way of life, but also the different areas of your existence into which it can be incorporated. We will spend time examining your own self as well as your home to help you create that sense of peace and calm that you have been desperately searching for. We will also go further and look at how hygge can be applied to your experiences, friends, relationships, and even your work. By doing so, you will learn how to feel more fulfilled and content with each and every aspect of your life.
Denmark is regarded as being the happiest nation in the world, and hygge is the most important aspect that Danes attribute this to. If that is the case, then attempting to incorporate it into your own life takes on even more importance.
We are not talking about wholesale changes. Often, subtle differences can have a huge and positive impact. By the end, you will not view your life as being completely different. Instead, you will view it with a new sense of contentment that had undoubtedly been missing before.
So, let us start to change your life.
Chapter 1
The Origins of Hygge and its Meaning
We can begin our journey by offering an explanation of the origins of hygge. The word itself is one that you may not have heard of up until this point, and there is no literal translation that we can offer you.
Instead, it is generally accepted that hygge is more of a feeling or thought. It is connected to the idea of cozy and comfortable living. It’s something that brings peace to both your heart and mind.
To some, hygge may appear to be a fantasy world as the idea of having a life such as this is an alien concept that is impossible to achieve. Even, if that is what you believe, this book will still be for you.
Although it is the Danes who have really transformed this concept into an art form, to get to the absolute root of the movement we have to jump to another Scandinavian country, Norway. However, this is a bit of a cheat, if we are honest, as the first appearance of the theory of hygge came at a time when Denmark and Norway had a close bond. Indeed, they shared so many aspects that they were practically the same country, only the names were different.
In fact, even though we will refer to the Danes repeatedly through this book, the term hyggé only appeared in the Danish language and literature approximately 150 years ago. However, it is fair to say that they have since taken the concept and made it their own. Indeed, they are now regarded as being the main exporters of hygge.
Also, Denmark is not the only country that uses the concepts that we will take you through during this e-book. Instead, Scandinavian countries as a whole have applied the same rules and approaches, and even Germany has its own version, just with slight changes in the language. However, no matter the country you are in, there are various aspects of hygge that can be applied to any circumstances or situations. It certainly is adaptable to anything that you wish to throw at it.
Of course, it is difficult for us to really understand why it took off in popularity. Denmark is often a dark and cold country, and at times it can be tough to understand how you could find anything that is cozy or comfortable in such a climate.
But then, perhaps that is also the reason as
