Four blocks… That’s it? This sucks, Brandon said aloud to the empty passenger seat of his pre-owned sedan; remarking on what, since childhood, he had already known to be true of his hometown’s downtown strip. Well, he thought, at least nowadays it’s not as desolate. There are a few people out, desperately buzzing around for something to do -other than the same ol’ nightly tv routine. His boredom from waiting and people watching, of what few there were, in silence for the past hour had progressed into aggravation bringing about a dismal end to such an otherwise mundane day.

Bing… His phone, held by a suction cup attached to the front window, illuminated with the chime. Finally, time to go. He turned the key and the engine rumbled soothingly as it turned over. It wasn’t luck that Brandon was able to pull out onto the street without traffic, he knew that, it was the empty town, but all of his mounting distress melted away as he delighted in knowing that someone out there needed him. Off he went, following the blue directional arrow of the map on his phone.

It had been a slow two weeks home from college for the summer. Instead of trying to find a ‘real job’, Brandon had been picking up odd jobs thanks to his phone. Everything from delivering groceries to rideshare supplied a modest income. He had even asked his dad if he could rent out his room and subsequently stay on the pull-out couch, but his genial-as-always father refused. "You’re
