    preface

In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you. I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation. —2 Corinthians 6:2, NIV

This book is the second of a three book series on Creation (Genesis 1-2), the Fall of Man (Genesis 3), and the Defiant Nature of Mankind throughout history (Genesis 4 through Revelation). These books are:

evolution – The Greatest Deception in Modern History (Scientific Evidence for Divine Creation)(2011,2nd Ed.2014, 2016) presents overwhelming scientific evidence for Divine Creation.

World in Denial – Defiant Nature of Mankind (Prophetic Evidence for a Divine Creator) (2017) presents a historical perspective of the effects of evil (arrogance, immorality, depravity, violence, lawlessness, terrorism, greed, and idolatry) on humanity and prophetic evidence for a Divine Creator.

Defeating Evil –God's Plan Before the Beginning of Time(Planet Earth - God's Testing Ground) (2018, 2019) is an overview of creation (including creation and purpose of angels, our physical world, and creation and purpose of mankind); origin of evil; fall of mankind; the effects of evil on humanity; the problem with free will; and God’s plan for defeating evil.

...without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. (Hebrews 11:6, NIV)

    in reading this book

This book is presented in general chronological order beginning with creation and ending with the defeat of evil and the future of mankind.

Some explanations are found in 'text boxes’ and Appendices A,B, C, and D provide additional explanations on more controversial subjects. Appendix D provides a summary of the evidences for the existence of God—scientific, prophetic, and historical.

Mankind denotes both man and woman. The letter 'c.' placed before dates of antiquity means 'about' and 'cf.' before Scripture means 'compare.' Some words such as cross and heaven may or may not be capitalized at the discretion of the author; the word hell is usually not capitalized unless it is in a quote or at the beginning of a sentence. The word Scripture is capitalized.

Free will, freedom, and freedom of choice have similar meanings, and these words or phrases are interchangeable. Some phrases and explanations about the problem of free will, love, and evil are often repeated throughout the book for better understanding. Two other books noted above have been referenced to provide additional information on specific topics.

    prologue

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. — John 3:16, NIV The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. — 1 John 3:8, NIV

This book describes the nature of God; creation and purpose of angels; creation of our physical world; the creation and purpose of mankind; the origin of good and evil, and the fall of mankind; the effects of evil (arrogance, immorality, depravity, lawlessness, violence, terrorism, greed, and idolatry) on humanity; the continuing problem of evil throughout history and in our world today; and God’s solution in defeating evil.

The primary focus of the book is the nature and necessity of free will (freedom of choice); its relation with love and evil; the defiant nature of mankind; and life on earth as God’s testing ground for mankind. The book answers most of the challenging questions concerning good and evil, and concludes by emphasizing the absolute necessity of making the right choice during life on earth.

    challenging questions

Wh ere did evil come from? Did God have a plan to defeat evil before laying the foundations of the world? Did the plan include preserving 'free will' and 'love'? And could a holy, righteous God create evil that permeates our world? If God is holy, righteous, and omnipotent, and if He did not create evil, where did it come from, and why did He allow evil to have its way?

Why is there so much arrogance, immorality, depravity, violence, lawlessness, terrorism, and greed in our world today and throughout all of history? If God is all good, holy, and righteous, why doesn’t He put an end to pain, suffering, misery, and tragedy? Could evil, pain, and suffering have been avoided?

Given the sum total of human misery and grief in the world, why did He create the world in the first place? Why does He not perform more miracles to avoid pain and suffering? And by what moral standard do we believe there is evil in the world? Is there any real evidence for the existence of a sovereign, holy, and righteous God?

Why didn’t God create humans who would not sin? Scripture tells us that God is completely sovereign—so then, why does God permit evil? When evil first appeared, why didn’t He just do away with evil 'then and there'? Again, He has the power to do so. Does He lack the compassion or the will?

Does God have limitations? If so, what are they? The answers may be surprising. So then, why did God create mankind and allow so much terrible pain, suffering, and heartache throughout history based on an idea (mankind) that would eventually fail? When will God bring an end to evil and the world's misery? Is earth a testing ground for mankind?

Is there an eternal hell? Why did God create people He knew would go to hell? Why will some people suffer (forever) in hell? Will there be a good end to life on earth?

    Chapter 1

    In the Beginning - God

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him; and apart from Him nothing came into being... — John 1:1–3, NAS

    Who Is God?

The proper name for God is Yahweh , or the Lord. He is the Creator of the heavens and the earth and all that exists (Jeremiah 10:12-16, 51:15-19; Isaiah 40:28, NIV). The Bible teaches there is only one true God and He is completely loving, just, and holy (Isaiah 6:1-3; Psalm 99:5; Habakkuk 1:13; Psalm 5:5-6; Isaiah 57:15; and Leviticus 20:26).

...the name of the Lord, the Eternal God (Genesis 21:33, NIV); His ways are eternal (Habakkuk 1:12, 3:6, NIV); ...everlasting to everlasting (1 Chronicles 16:36, 29:10; Nehemiah 9:5; Psalm 103:17, 106:48, NIV); Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever (Hebrews 1:8, NIV); I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End (Revelation 1:8, 21:6, 22:13, NIV); And they will reign for ever and ever (Revelation 22:13, NIV); and As God told Moses, 'I AM WHO I AM' (Exodus 3:14, NIV).

God is the great Creator—the power inside and outside the universe. He created time and space, the stars and constellations, the earth, and all life including mankind, God saw all that He had made, and it was very good... (Genesis 1:31, NIV) [Bold added] No one survives without the good that God provides: love, peace, hope, beauty, health, and relationships (to name a few). (Bickel & Jantz, p. 19)

People lest not forget the Lord is omnipresent, omnipotent, and omniscient (Romans 8:29; Ephesians 1:4-5; 1 Corinthians 2:7) and the Lord is a warrior (Exodus 15:3, NIV)—He does whatever pleases Him (Psalms 115:3, 135:6; Job 23:13; Daniel 4:35, NIV), and "He is to be
