About this ebook

Secrets have a way of burrowing deep, whether at the heart of our male protagonist or at the center of an all female government set to implode. The year is 2039, the Government tightly controls the lives of the citizens while beings from another world have taken over earth by planting altered females in power, females who want to enslave the remaining people on earth to do their bidding.

But our male protagonist is also altered genetically by a force that stands to guard the population from such a scheme: a process of accelerated natural selection.

Our male protagonist is self-sufficient, goal-oriented and on the surface, seems like he has his act together. But he hides behind a 'mask' until he meets a nurse, who is not afraid to speak her mind, invest her energy in him and his multi-layered secrets.

In this fantasy/adventure/mystery, building a new relationship while rebuilding a society that made poor choices, will have frightening consequences:

Demonstrators advanced; the hospital gates closed automatically. Security officers ran towards the entrance, guns drawn.
The noise from the demonstrators grew louder as they assaulted the hospital gate. I couldn’t make out what the demonstrators were yelling, too much confusion. Someone threw a fire bomb at the gates, the roadway into the hospital erupted in flames.

David Werrett

Author of Abort! Abort! Voyage to Save the Mind, d h Werrett has a new series, Secrets. Secrets Part One is offered as a 'gift' to his readers to give them a taste of a fantasy world where the protagonist and the antagonist are not always what they seem. Werrett lives on a bucolic gentleman's farm, is a SciFi and history buff as well as a pilot. He writes his stories chapter by chapter, without a detailed outline. "I like the spontaneous development of the action and the plot." Creating a novel length story requires the persistent application of a daily writing regime. "When the scope of my story seems overwhelming, when the plot and characters seem too complicated for me to grasp, I just write, I write my way through one difficult scene or chapter, then see where it leads." His characters are often given choices, they can perpetuate the same thinking and addictions, or receive guidance, often from an unexpected, and sometimes humorous, source. "Including humor into a novel, which has serious intent, challenging human interactions as well as action-packed drama, makes the story believable. Then add a touch of reality and share a laugh with me when I hear my friends say, 'You just can’t make this stuff up!'" Visit him anytime at dhwerrett.com.

    Secrets Part One

Chapter 1 Are You Keeping a Secret?

Not deliberately, except the best move I ever made was to be truthful with myself. I put aside the ever-present self-doubts and answered, What do you want to know?

I saw the scars, the scars on the inside of your thigh when I was down there this morning and some of them are fresh. Do you want to talk about it?

No, I want to buy time to make the much-needed transformation away from unhealthy coping mechanisms. But instead, I lowered my eyes and replied, Doesn't matter anymore. The only thing that matters is right now, this morning; you and me, here in this bed.

Doesn't your health matter to you?

I am concerned about my physical and mental health. I don’t want anyone to know, it’s so shameful. I shouldn’t have pursued you, I took the chance not thinking I would end up having to face you on this. I wanted company, we seemed to hit it off from the start.

Scrunch up in bed, I want to see the scars again, can I see them again? Pull up your nightshirt, let me help you, spread your legs. Some of these are faded and some are new, this must have been going on for a long time.

When we first met, I told you I was troubled and had hoped that would discourage you from wanting to be intimate, we could have just remained friends with the same interests to share.

You didn’t expect we would have sex? You didn't think I would see?

I didn't realize it would get intimate this quickly, I thought I had time. I am so ashamed. Have I offended you?

No, I guess it explains a lot, why you don't talk about your past. Did she know? I'm sorry, I shouldn't go there. The scars are a shock - that's all - I'll change the subject. It bends to the left. Is that the natural way when it’s in your pants? It looks straight when you are erect.

You're too funny. I'll change places with you. Let me get down on you, maybe that will take your mind off the scars.

    Whew!

Must have been good? Was it as good for you as it was for me? Just kidding.

Can we just lie here and talk?

    Sure.

Why do you cut? In the ER, I’ve seen young people who cut. It's bad to see; they are so screwed up. Some are high on drugs. You, you don't seem troubled like that. Does anyone know, health professionals or a therapist?

"I keep it to myself. I have been trying to control the urge. I thought the only time someone would find out is if I was hospitalized.

"When I first met you, I had a fantasy we might end up in bed. I stopped cutting, it takes a while for the scars to fade. I thought you wouldn't see them.
