The Long Corridor
Rev. Eugene L. Neville
Wow! My own space.
I can run up and down the hallway all day long.
Here, nobody will tell me to be still.
I can kick my soccer ball into the next room,
No one will be there to stop me.
I can shout as loud as I can,
The only voice I will hear is my own echo.
This place is awesome!
How did I get in here?
What did I do wrong to deserve this?
What’s with all these steps?
How do I get out of here?
What’s behind that strange darkness?
Is that the end of the corridor?
Why am I here?
Where is the effervescent light coming from?
Is the light source real or artificial?
Are these steps descending or ascending?
What do the etchings in the arches mean?
Why is this corridor so long?
Is stepping into that strange darkness the only safe way out?
This place is so different.
The path is covered with a beautiful long red carpet.
The walls are brilliant and elegant.
The arches are fantastic!
My path is now much clearer,
I am now closer to the strange darkness.
I am not afraid. I feel so peaceful.
Wow! It’s amazing!
Standing here in the midst of this strange Light
Is glorious, majestic and inexplicably beautiful!
The Lord is my Shepherd.
Even though, now I have to walk through the corridors of the Strange Light
I will not be afraid because now I can clearly see
God has always been with me!
Normally, I am a very private person, but having spent forty five years as a pastor I have become more transparent. My thoughts are guarded with seasoned discretion. However, at the age of seventy two, I sense the need to be even more transparent, and to humbly expose myself with the intent to encourage others to be pro-active in dealing with matters of health and spirituality. My life’s journey has led me down many perplexing and sometimes painful corridors, which euphemistically I refer to as strange darkness,
even though there were reflections of light along the way. I discovered that it is only when we near the end of the final corridors of our lives that we begin to see darkness from a mature perspective.
As I contend with the challenges of growing older and especially in my struggles with glaucoma (the silent thief of sight), I am hopeful that my steps might serve as an inspirational source of encouragement to those who in like manner might be coping with this same ordeal or any other life-altering medical condition.
Chapter 1
The Corridor of Theological Reflection
Life is a majestic and precious gift from Almighty God, extended freely to all of humanity. God created every human being equal in his sight, and decreed that everyone be granted the right to live with dignity, love, and respect. God’s original destiny for humankind was declared to be good.
However, the consequence of the abject disobedience of one person (Adam) to God’s life-authenticating instructions was to open a channel for evil to make its incursion into the human condition—thereby ushering in violence, sickness, and death. Consequently, throughout the corridors of time men and women, cognizant of their estrangement from the creator, have been taunted from within. Their restless souls have desperately sought to be delivered—either from self-centered religious belief systems or from their usurpation of power from those weaker than themselves. However, despite these self-generated efforts, nothing is able to remedy a deep sense of estrangement from God or bring sustainable inner healing. God is the only one who is able to restore all of creation back to its original design and purpose.
Before the foundations of the cosmos God made the restorative process for the earth possible by
