    ABOUT JOHN McCAIN

Holding a post since 1986 is really commendable; this shows how efficiently John McCain has served his post as the senior United States Senator from Arizona. From a naval aviator, he evolved as one among the prominent politicians that United States has ever seen. Even though he lost to Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election, he definitely created an impact as a Republican candidate. In 1990s, McCain made creditable attempts to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam. His individualistic approach to situations made him closer to general public and media.

Born on 29th August 1936, McCain was the son of John S. McCain who was a naval officer and Roberta Wright. The family lived in Coco Solo Naval Air Station, in Panama Canal Zone. His father belonged to a Scotch- Irish and English lineage, besides his father McCain’s paternal grandfather was also a four-star US navy admiral. In 1954, McCain completed his graduation from Virginia and it’s obvious that he also followed his father’s footsteps and joined the Navy. After basic training sessions, McCain became a naval aviator of ground attack aircraft in 1960. It was during the Vietnam War in 1967 that as a part of the bombing campaign, he was asked to fly A-4 Skyhawk. Unfortunately, the bomb exploded, and the plane went down, McCain survived the crash but had injuries on legs and chest. The 23rd bombing mission changed his life; the A-4E Skyhawk in 1967 was ambushed at the North Vietnamese capital, Hanoi. In this attack McCain broke both his arms and one leg and was taken to the Hao Lo Prison or ‘Hanoi Hilton’.

When the Vietnamese realized that his father was a high-ranking admiral, they provided him medical assistance. Every day he was tortured and was asked to hand over the military secrets. But McCain was loyal to his nation and never uttered a single word. For five and a half years, he was under their captivity and finally was released in March 1973. The physical condition of McCain was so deplorable that it was impossible for him to continue in Navy. In 1977, he was posted as the Navy’s liaison to the US Senate. This gave him the motivation to enter in politics and finally retired from the Navy in 1981, as a captain. As a part of his Hanoi Hilton’, McCain shifted to Arizona and his connection with Ronald Reagan helped him to be a part of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. In 1986 McCain was elected to the US Senate from Arizona, afterwards his career went on to another level and was re-elected to this post in 1992, 1998, 2004 and 2010.

It was his speech in the 1998 Republican National Convention that established him as an eminent politician. Apart from US Senate member, he served in the Armed Services Committee, Commerce Committee and Indian Affairs Committee. Since January 1993, he is serving as the Chairman of the International Republican Institute. Even though he opposed the decision of Bush during the 2004 presidential re-elections McCain went on to support him. His military knowledge and experience helped him to become the Chairman of Senate Committee on Armed Services in 2015. For the first time he contested for the presidential election against his biggest rival George W. Bush in 2000. Unfortunately, he couldn’t win and afterwards supported Bush during his later election campaigns. Again, he contested for the presidential election in 2008 and this time he lost to
