GEORGE H W BUSH: A BRIEF LOOK INTO HIS LIFE
The 41st president of the United States, George Herbert Walker Bush set history being the first sitting Vice President who turned to Presidency. This WWII veteran began to be called as ‘Bush the Elder’ and ‘George Bush Senior’ with his son George W Bush becoming the 43rd President. Being the VP of Ronald Reagan for two terms, he got elected in the 1988 General Elections but lost the second term to Bill Clinton.
Born to Prescott Sheldon Bush and Dorothy Walker Bush, George H W Bush was born in Milton, Massachusetts on June 12, 1924. Joining the US Navy at an age of 18, he became the youngest aviator to fly fighter planes at that time. During WWII, he was assigned to pilot torpedo bombers. He had a narrow escape from death as his torpedo plane was shot down by the Japanese on September 2, 1944. He continued to move on with the target and escaped in parachute just before the aircraft got burned. George HW Bush was awarded Distinguished Flying Cross for his valiant service during the WWII.
Just after the return from service, he married Barbara Pierce and joined for graduation at Yale University. Moving to Texas with family, he tried his luck in oil business which turned to be booming. As the venture went more successful, so was his wealth. With the growing interest in politics, he contested in the 1964 US Senate elections, in which he lost. But succeeded as a Republican candidate; for the House of Representatives two years
