MICHELLE OBAMA
An American lawyer and writer Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama was the first Lady of the United States from 2009 to 2017. Michelle is married to the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, and is the first African American First Lady.
She was born on 17th January 1964 in Chicago, Illinois. Her father, Fraser Robinson was a city-pump operator and a Democratic precinct captain. Michelle’s mother Marian was a secretary at Spiegel’s but she left her job to take care of Michelle and her older brother, Craig. She and her brother were 21 months apart in age and were often mistaken for twins. Their family was a close knit one and their parents raised them with an emphasis on education. When Michelle was in the sixth grade, she started taking classes in her school’s gifted program. There she learned French and a crash course in biology. Later she joined the Whitney. M. Young Magnet high school, it was city’s first magnet High School for gifted children. Among other activities she served as the student government treasurer. Michelle graduated from the school as salutatorian in 1981.
Michelle joined the Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey in 1981 and did bachelor’s degree in Sociology, with a minor degree in African-American studies. In 1985 she joined the Harvard Law School; Juris doctor degree, Cambridge, Massachusetts and joined the Black Law Students Association. This association often brought speaks to campus which aimed at addressing legal issues and career guidance. In 1988 she was awarded her J.D and took part in demonstrations calling for the enrollment and hiring of more minority students and professors. After completing her education Michelle worked as an associate in the Chicago Branch of the firm Sidley Austin.
In 1989, she met her future husband Barack Obama who was a summer intern to whom she was assigned as an advisor. Initially she was not ready to date Barack, believing that their relationship would affect their work. But they eventually fell in love. After dating her for two years he proposed her and they got married at Trinity United Church of Christ on 3rd October 1992. They had two daughters Malia and Sasha, born in 1998 and 2001 respectively.
In 1991 Michelle decided to leave her job and wanted to pursue her career in public service. She started working as an assistant to Mayor Richard Daley and then an assistant commissioner of planning and development for the city of Chicago. In 1993 she was appointed as the executive director of the Chicago Public office. For developing the school’s first community program in 1996 she joined the Chicago University as an associate dean of student services. Her hard work and dedication made her the vice president for community and external affairs at the university of Chicago Medical Center. Michelle gained fame when she delivered a high profile speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2004.
Barack Obama was elected as U.S senator from Illinois that November. In 2007 Michelle cut down her own professional work and she worked for the Campaign during Barack’s run for the Democratic presidential nomination. Eventually Barack won the Presidential election and became the 44th President of the United States. In the reelection held in 2012 Barack Obama contested against Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney. For his election she travelled the country, giving talks and making public appearances. In September of that year she gave an incredible speech at the Democratic National Convention.
