    QUOTES OF THE GREAT COMMUNICATOR

    Opportunity

America needs jobs and opportunity, not make-work and handouts.

Isn't it interesting that all of those people who support the choice of abortion have already been born?

America's foreign policy supports freedom, democracy, and human dignity for all mankind, and we make no apologies for it. The opportunity society that we want for ourselves we also want for others, not because we're imposing our system on others but because those opportunities belong to all people as God-given birthrights and because by promoting democracy and economic opportunity we make peace more secure.

Now, so there will be no misunderstanding, it's not my intention to do away with government. It is rather to make it work - work with us, not over us; to stand by our side, not ride on our back. The government can and must provide opportunity, not smother it; foster productivity, not stifle it.

Together, we'll build a far better future for America a future of growth, opportunity, and security, anchored by the values of a people who are confident, compassionate, and whose heart is good.

ALEC has forged a unique partnership between state legislators and leaders from the corporate and business community. This partnership offers businessmen the extraordinary opportunity to apply their talents to solve America's problems and build on our opportunities.

Each generation goes further than the generation preceding it because it stands on the shoulders of that generation. You will have opportunities beyond anything we've ever known.

Our country is great because it is built on principles of self-reliance, opportunity, innovation, and compassion for others.

Government can and must provide opportunity, not smother it; foster productivity; not stifle it.

Today it is difficult to find leaders who are independent of the forces that have brought us our problems: The Congress, the bureaucracy, the lobbyists, big business, and big labor.

Let us thank God for life and the blessings He's put before us. High among them is our families, our freedom, and the opportunities of a new year.

    Life

Life is one grand, sweet song, so start the music.

We will never recognize the true value of our own lives until we affirm the value in the life of others.

Seventy-five years ago I was born in Tampico, Illinois, in a little flat above the bank building. We didn't have any other contact with the bank than that.

You get a little stir crazy during the week.

Of the four wars in my lifetime, none came about because the U.S. was too strong.

    Dream

I told you once that our marriage was like an adolescent's dream of what marriage should be like. That hasn't changed.

Stick to your dreams and determine that you're going to make them come true.

I'm sure everyone feels sorry for the individual who has fallen by the wayside or who can't keep up in our competitive society, but my own compassion goes beyond that to those millions of unsung men and women, who get up every morning, send the kids to school, go to work, try to keep up the payments on their house, pay exorbitant taxes to make possible compassion for the less fortunate, and as a result have to sacrifice many of their own desires and dreams and hopes. The government owes them something better than always finding a new way to make them share the fruit of their toils with others.

Whatever else history may say about me when I'm gone, I hope it will record that I appealed to your best hopes, not your worst fears; to your confidence rather than your doubts. My dream is that you will travel the road ahead with liberty's lamp guiding your steps and opportunity's arm steadying your way.

The task that has fallen to us as Americans is to move the conscience of the world, to keep alive the hope and dream of freedom. For if we fail or falter, there'll be no place for the world's oppressed to flee to. This is not a role we sought. We preach no manifest destiny. But like the Americans who brought a new nation into the world 200 years ago, history has asked much of us in our time. Much we've already given; much more we must be prepared to give.

America is too great to dream small dreams.

From my mother, I learned the value of prayer, how to have dreams and believe I could make them come true.

Politics is not a bad profession. If you succeed there are many rewards, if you disgrace yourself you can always write a book.

At the root of everything that we’re trying to accomplish is the belief that America has a mission. We are a nation of freedom, living under God, believing all citizens must have the opportunity to grow, create wealth, and build a better life for those who follow. If we live up to those moral values, we can keep the American dream alive for our children and our grandchildren, and America will remain mankind’s best hope.

The national Democratic leadership is going so far left, they've left America. Don't let them bury the American dream in their graveyard of gloom and envy.

The glory of this land has been its capacity for transcending the moral evils of our past. For example, the long struggle of minority citizens for equal rights, once a source of disunity and civil war is now a point of pride for all Americans. We must never go back. There is no room for racism, anti-Semitism, or other forms of ethnic and racial hatred in this country.

Where others fear trade and economic growth, we see opportunities for creating new wealth and undreamed-of opportunities for millions in our own land and beyond. Where others seek to throw up barriers, we seek to bring them down; where others take counsel of their fears, we follow our hopes.

And always remember that you are Americans, and it is your birthright to dream great dreams in this sweet and blessed land, truly the greatest, freest, strongest nation on Earth.

Most of my dreams came true.

For the eight years, I was president I never let my dream of a nuclear-free world fade from my mind.

I think all of us are agreed that war is probably man's greatest stupidity and I think peace is the dream that lives in the heart of everyone wherever he may be in the world, but unfortunately, unlike a family quarrel, it doesn't take two to make war. It only takes one, unless the other one is prepared to surrender at the first hint of force.

America has not been a story or a byword. That small community of Pilgrims prospered and, driven by the dreams and, yes, by the ideas of the Founding Fathers, went on to become a beacon to all the oppressed and poor of the world.

My dream is that you will travel the road ahead with liberty's lamp guiding your steps and opportunity's arm steadying your way.

Small business is the gateway to opportunity for those who want a piece of the American dream. Well, wouldn't it be nice to hear a little more about the forgotten heroes of America those who create most of our new jobs, like the owners of stores down the street; the faithful who support our churches, synagogues, schools, and communities; the brave men and women everywhere who produce our goods, feed a hungry world, and keep our families warm while they invest in the future to build a better America? That's where miracles are made, not in Washington, D.C.

"Isn't our choice really not one of left or right, but of up or down? Down through the welfare state to statism, to more and more government largesse accompanied always by more government authority, less individual liberty,
