Act 1 scene 1
The scene is an attic terrace of the small house. At the rise of curtain Saba, Sameen are seated in two armchairs R. and L., respectively. They both are knitting sweater and beside them, is a ball of pashm. Sameen is petite woman, wearing ordinary cloths. Saba is fatty and brunette beauty. Birds are chipping hardly.
Sameen: this color of pashm seem not to be the same as last week’s I bought. Haven knows what color these girls bought out.
Saba: different color--- same pashm. It will contrast well. Have you finished the last one?
Sameen: not yet. Gee, I'm tired.
Saba: I’ve just knit two arms.
Sameen: that’s good.
Saba: I suppose birds are not chipping today. I assume they are angry.
Sameen: (laughed) may be it so. But I presume they are hungry. ain’t it ?
Saba: (she smiles pleasantly at her and hunched her shoulders up)
Enter Beena, fatty, snub nose, dark
Beena: Assalam-o-Alaikum, good morning Sameen, how are you? Dear.
Sameen: (lifts her head, smiles) every morning is not good morning so far, my lady. Well, I’m good still. How about you?
Beena: (smiles) pretty same, my dear Sam, old just like my destiny. Gee, that's tough to knit.
Saba: (sarcastically) destiny is like your shadow baby and this ultimate lot trail you each mo; either it is fruit full or spoof able coz doom is testate by God.
Beena: (grins) oh! Gee
Enters Fatima, 20 years old Jill, holding one bowl of gruel, and takes to her mother Saba
Saba: wow! Thanks darling
Fatima: (smiles) mention not ma! Assalam-o-Alaikum Aunts how are you both?
Sameen: (placidly) good, sweet heart.
Beena: (with slight smile) okay, thanks.
Saba takes swig of gruel
Fatima: is it nice? Ain’t ma?
Saba: oh! It’s tasty, it’s savory but it’s hot. (Bowl teems with gruel) Wow!
Fatima smiles pleasingly and goes
Beena: (frowningly) hot things always scald to tongue either it’s a talk or victual.
Saba :( laughs awkwardly) what on earth do you mean?
Beena: nothing
Saba: oh! Well, that’s nonsense.
Beena: I really don’t see anything nonsense in it.
Saba: oh! Really.
Beena: yeah, (with wonder) you understand?
Saba: (with casual irritation) no, didn’t you hear me?
Beena: don’t you feel----
Saba: what? (She Quaffs)
Beena: nothing
Pause
Beena goes
Saba: why does she mock me all the time?
Sameen:
