Susan Robb’s call to ministry led her to leave her career to pursue a Master’s of Divinity degree at Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University. She graduated magna cum laude in 2006 with an award in homiletics. Susan’s area of expertise lies in writing and teaching Bible studies and exploring the idea of listening to and responding to God’s call. She is the author of Called: Hearing and Responding to God’s Voice, Seven Words, and The Angels of Christmas. Susan is the former senior associate minister at Highland Park United Methodist Church in Dallas, Texas, where she was part of the church staff for 20 years. She is married to Ike, and they have two children, Caroline and James.

    Planning the Session

    SESSION GOALS

    Participants in the study should have the opportunity to

    •describe the idea of calling as a matter of faith;

    •talk about their own experiences of being called to different roles in their lives;

    •hear and understand the story of Abraham and Sarah;

    •connect the story of Abraham and Sarah to their own lives.

    BIBLICAL BACKGROUND

    If you can, it is helpful to read the whole story of Abraham in Genesis 12–25 before the group meets. Some of that material is touched on only slightly in the chapter, and some is not touched on at all, but having the whole story in mind can help with context of the specific events for yourself and your participants. It is also possible that some participants may be familiar with the story, have questions about it, and quite possibly find parts of it troubling. The most important passages for the discussion of the chapter are excerpted below.
