Satya, A New Truth is Revealed - Alicia Bozza
Chapter 1
M om!
Jaime was startled, mid-daydream. Whaaat?
You forgot to buy milk!
Thankfully, they were still in the parking lot of the grocery store and Joey was old enough to sit in the car alone.
It was 1999, they lived in a place like Mayberry, USA. An idyllic town, complete with all a modern family could dream of.
Shaking off her daydream, she hurried towards the store to retrieve her missing item. Milk, milk, milk
she muttered in an attempt to remember. Sometimes, when in her dream-state, even easy, mundane things were hard to remember. It had been a wild ride of a year with the kids. A mixture of hormones coming through for the kids, and for her, mid-life approaching faster than Alice in Wonderland’s White Rabbit running to its rabbit hole. A rabbit hole... yes...that kind of year.
It all started in yoga. The local Rec Center offered a free class, and after much prying, her girlfriend convinced her that this was the thing to do to relieve stress. So, after a quick trip to the mall for a yoga mat and pants, off to yoga it was.
Caiaphany. As if yoga wasn’t foreign enough, Jaime’s teacher had a name that was even more foreign. Cai for short,
said the skinny instructor, whose nationality was undetectable. Ok, Cai- I could handle that
she muttered to herself. Jaime’s hopes were high that the class would be good, but she found it hard to do the simplest thing. Breathe… Breathe!
Cai whispered breathily. I need to hear you br-ea-the!
Jaime was in a tree pose and Cai’s whispers ran through her body like a gentle stroke of lightning, almost knocking her over. Steady!
said Cai, gently realigning Jaime’s hips so she wouldn’t fall over. Let your eyes gently gaze at the front wall. Focus on the Sanskrit hanging there.
Sat-ya
Jaime whispered, as she drew her attention to the mystical purple color of the wall hanging. Yes. It is the Sanskrit word for truthfulness.
Jaime now had three jobs to do; stand in Tree pose, stare at truthfulness and breathe...
Class was over in a flash, but the exertion to focus was almost enough to drive her away from the Rec Center for good. Thank God it’s only a free class, she thought to herself as she rolled up her yoga mat with every intention to bolt. Jaime had made it a bad habit to keep her distance from anything the least bit confrontational. She rose, turned to leave and almost crashed into Cai. Startled, she jumped, grabbing her chest. Oh my gosh, I didn’t see you there!
she gasped. My apologies! Did I startle you?
said Cai, wryly. Jaime let out a deep sigh, straightening her shirt. A little,
said Jaime slightly embarrassed. You did great today in class. I saw real effort in your budding practice. The Rec center was surprised at the turnout and extended the free class to a free week! I’d really like to see where this could take you on your yoga journey. Will I see you again?
Ah, well, um, yes! Sure!
Jaime blurted out as she backed out of the class, almost bumping into another classmate as she turned to run out the door. Sure!
Finally in the car, Jaime breathed a real sigh of relief. Why did I say yes? Ugh.
Jaime did not need another thing on the list of things to stress about...but something deep inside said it was going to be alright. So, going with her gut, she made a mental note to come back mid-week to yoga class. Grabbing her to-do list, she was off to the next errand of the day.
It was off to the local pet store to buy cat food. It was a little bit of a drive to get there since there weren’t many around in her quaint little town.
Clang!! Rang the odd-sounding bell as she walked into the pet store. It struck her as funny that the little bell hanging on the door would make such a deep sound. Meow-mix, please!
Jaime said as the Meow-mix jingle chimed in her head... the third aisle on the left!
Chimed the sales clerk with a smirk as the dang jingle came to her mind as well. That will be $2.22 please,
said the sales clerk, still smirking. Did you find everything ok?
Yes, thank you!
smiled Jaime.
Check!
Jaime said to herself proudly as she finished another thing off her to do list. Clang!! She heard it again as she stepped out of the pet store...except this time the pet store door was closed and she was standing right in front of it. So where did that noise come from? Right next-door. A new store had opened up in the previously-vacant storefront adjacent to the pet store. It was the source of the mysterious clang. Curiosity got the cat, and Jaime cautiously walked over to see what the noise was all about. Eyes closed, a little man from China was seated cross-legged on a cushion, clanging his bell. 2-2-2,
he said. Astonished, Jaime exclaimed, Excuse me?
2-2-2,
said the little man. The sound of singing bowl music became louder as she approached. Jaime squinted, and her eyes rolled to the left in thought, as her brain tried to figure out how this little man could have heard the dollar amount the cashier had just given her....How did you know?
Know what?
he said, opening his eyes. $2.22? The price of the…,
said Jaime, in wonder. 222?
That number was given to me; perhaps to capture your attention said the funny little man.
You are at the right place. He said in his funny little accent.
At the right time, said Jaime as she glanced at the wall hanging in the store window with the word of the day. Satya.
Satya, that means...truth, right?
Jaime said proudly. Yesss!
said the little old man, hissing as he held the letter s. Satya is a way of life. A mindfulness of speech, making sure the words you say bring life and not death.
Words bring death?!
Jaime gasped as she thought of her Dad and his recent passing. Well, not an ‘end of life’ as we know it, but a metaphorical death, like the death of a dream or concept,
said the old man, again emphasizing the ‘s’ sound in concept. It had a hypnotic effect on Jaime as it made her really stop and think. Satya
she whispered as she noticed all the purple colors in the shop window that matched the color of the wall hanging at the yoga class. She hoped the purple color would bring more life than death. Did you ever have a dream?
The little old man said as he gently touched her sleeve. Huh? Oh, yes, of course, doesn’t everybody?
Jaime blurted out, coming out of her trance. Well...your dream...where is your dream? Where did it go? Did your dream die?
he said, looking at Jaime as if he already knew. My dream...
she started; oh, it’s not important now,
Jaime said, glancing down at her watch. Oh!
she gasped realizing the time was slipping by way too fast. I’m late!
she cried, running off like White Rabbit yet again. See you later!
the old man called to her with a very Cheshire Cat-like grin.
Chapter 2
Jaime let out a large sigh. She was finally alone in the car. Two minutes of peace alone before picking up Joey at the middle school. Fresh Meow Mix aroma in the car reminded her to cross off her to-do list item. The only thing she could find to write with was the grape-scented Mr. Sketch marker left by one of the kids. Picking up the purple marker, her mind wandered to the yoga class and the old Chinese man. Purple seems to be the color of the day,
she muttered to herself. Just then, her friend Violet, burst out, calling, Jaime! Jaime!
while knocking on the car window, scaring the living daylights out of her. Ah!!!! Violet!!!
screamed Jaime. What on earth??
she cried while rolling down the window. "Oh, I’m
