About this ebook

In the days when people were owned by the land, two young girls found their power by becoming ghosts, then spirit guides.

This is their origin-story...

Their Dad had to raise them by himself, as Mother died shortly after birthing them. But as a spirit, she remained on Earth to watch over them. Sal and Jude could see her, and knew their Dad could feel her presence. Father and Mother taught them all they knew.

Efforts to enter the forest, to exploit its abundant wild game, have all been turned away by supernatural events. Unexplained by locals except that it's "haunted."

One day a mysterious stranger comes to the nearby village, asking for a guide to the Forest, knowing that if a person admitted to trespassing on the King's land, they could be put to death on the spot.

But he came to learn what he didn't know, and found out more than he asked for...

BY THE END OF THAT day, we had a choice. Turn back, or become a criminal.

The King's forest was an island surrounded by three seas. Those were the lands deeded to nobles by the king. And the people who lived there belonged to that land. Entering another land without permission could get you instantly imprisoned or killed. No trial, no recourse. Just the way it was back then.

Da belonged to one of those land-holdings. His visitor, if actually a member of the King's court, was of course immune. But he was not wearing any of his rings, or any identification that would prove who he was. Just dressed as a peasant, and with a four-day growth of beard, he was beginning to look and smell like one as well.

Well, Watcher, what do you think we should do?

Why do you call me 'watcher'? the visitor asked.

Because you never told me your name, or at least what you want to be called, Da said.

Frowning, the watcher hesitated. Because the first thing he thought of was to apologize. But out here, that was wasted breath. This teacher of his already knew he was stupid to
