Her Sugar His Spice - Dina Marie

    1

Kesha gazed at the sugary sweet as if it was the first meal she’d ever eaten. Creamy, buttercream frosting made her lick her lips in anticipation. Before she could eat it, she quickly slipped it inside of the baby blue box with eleven others and closed the lid.

Here you go, Mrs. O’Connell. Twelve butter cream cupcakes.

They look amazing! I can always count on you for the perfect dessert.

Kesha grins. Glad to hear it.

She swipes Mrs. O’Connell’s card before handing it back. Giving her the receipt, Anna sighed. The smell of warm, cooking cupcakes filled the air. She waved as her customer left. Glancing around, she rested her elbows on the counter.

The cupcake shop, Jake’s Cakes, was bustling with customers. Music played over the speakers, making the atmosphere warm and friendly. Kesha was the only one working the counter, but she wanted to be in the back. As much as she loved interacting with the customers, she wanted to be baking even more.

Her boss however, Jake, didn’t let anyone bake that wasn’t himself or someone he personally picked out. Kesha thought it was bullshit. When the last baker, Clarissa, had left, Kesha thought there would be an opening for her. Her replacement, a young Alex Sheppard, had stepped in instead.

Kesha glanced over her shoulder, glaring as she heard him singing loudly and out of tune. Alex was tall with dark blond hair. He couldn’t have been older than his late twenties, but Kesha could still make out strands of silvery grey hair. As she looked at him, he winked a dark blue eye at her before chuckling.

Jerk, she mumbled under her breath.

Kesha had worked in the little shop since she was sixteen. Almost ten years later and she was still waiting her turn to bake. Kesha didn’t believe that she was good at much, but baking was her calling. She could mix just about anything into a cupcake and it was a hit.

Are you ever going to stop glaring at me?

Kesha rolled her eyes. I would if the world was fair.

Alex sat a batch of freshly baked cupcakes on the counter for her to set up inside of the glass display case. These were chocolate, with frosting so fluffy and light they were begging to be eaten. Kesha took each one and placed them in the display case delicately. When she was done, she took a step back and admired her work.

They look great, Alex said over her shoulder, making her jump.

They would look better if I was the one who made them.

Alex scoffed as she carried the now empty tray into the back, to the sink. She let it slide beneath the water as she sighed. Kesha had big dreams, but it seemed to be taking forever to achieve them. She washed her hands before heading back to the front of the shop.

In the time it had taken her to go to the back, there was a line. She jumped into work mode, taking orders and making coffee as quickly as her hands allowed. By the time the line had diminished and everyone sat around the shop, happy and cozy, Kesha was exhausted. She checked her phone.

Time for me to head home.

Jake wants you to stay until closing.

Open mouthed, Kesha stared at Alex. Again? Haven’t I given that man enough? I have a date tonight."

With who? Alex asked, raising an eyebrow at her.

None of your business, that’s who.

    Fine.

Kesha watched him disappear back into the kitchen. Some part of her felt bad for giving him so much crap, but the other part of her was still pissed off. Jake always wanted her to work late, she was good with a crowd and kept the business running smoothly. Alex could bake, but he was horrible with money and it seemed, other people.

The rest of their shift went by slowly. By the time Kesha finished counting up the money and getting things in order for the next morning, it was dark. Alex was waiting for her by the door. When she walked outside, he locked up behind them.

    Still going on your date?

Yeah, she said with a nod. He’s waiting for me. I’ll see you tomorrow.

Want me to walk you to your car?

Kesha shook her head. I’ll be fine.

As they walked away, she turned back to glance at him. Alex wasn’t a bad guy, honestly when he was wearing the baby blue apron while they worked, she couldn’t help but to admire him. He was surprisingly muscular,
