A Rival Match - Ella Celestine

    One

This is the last time I let Mother talk me into doing her bidding. Carter Davidson grumbled to himself as he took labored steps up a steep and muddy hill that lead to the Donaldson’s driveway. The day was hot and thick with humidity, summer already at its hottest point. Sweat dripped down his face, and he could feel the beads drip down his spine. The day was already miserable, and it was barely past noon.

He loved his town this time of year. Blossom Cove was a small town of about five thousand people complete with a Main Street that was called President’s Row. The Row was lined with flowers of all varieties from roses to sunflowers and tulips, lilies and daisies. Flowers sat in old school wooden pots—large and small—and each store had some type of decorative awning. It was your quintessential small town with a barber, a salon and yes, even a butcher. Then there was the beautiful turquoise cove to the west of the city.

Carter’s family was a founding family of Blossom Cove, these days the only remaining founding family and by far the wealthiest family in town. Even their ridiculous family home, Davidson Manor, sat halfway up a hill that overlooked the cove. Their house was the highest occupied house on the hill affectionately called Billionaire’s Hill. At least it was until the Donaldson family moved into the house right on top of the hill, which is where he was headed—if he didn’t die first—at his mother’s request to find out what in the bloody hell is going on up there!

The construction of the mansion on the hill was ongoing and a small nuisance. To Beverly Davidson, it was a travesty that had to be rectified at any cost. She was already angry another family had moved onto Billionaire’s Hill, and when word had gotten out they were wealthier than her own family, Bev had been apoplectic. And so Carter had been sent—volunteered, actually—to make sure she didn’t offend the new neighbors.

Finally at the top of the hill, he took a look at the progress. The new house was a vision of straight white lines and large storybook windows. Kicking the mud off his shoes, Carter walked up the half-mud, half-gravel driveway, stopping at the large slate gray double doors with a large brass knocker. He rang the bell and waited, wondering about the new family.

    Hello?

Carter turned at the sweet husky voice and nearly choked on a breath. She was breathtaking with skin the color of the richest dark chocolate he’d ever seen. Long ebony locks hung bone straight over toned arms and soft shoulders. Light brown eyes smiled up at him. Hi. I’m Carter, and you are gorgeous.

Molly Donaldson smiled at Carter’s sweet words, and extremely thankful her dark skin hid all traces of the blush that heated her body. Thank you, Carter. You’re not so bad either. She stuck her hand out and gasped when his hand touched hers, leaving a spark of electricity zipping through her body. Molly. I’m Molly. Jeez girl if you smile any wider your face will crack. But the man was good-looking with warm baby blue eyes and golden blonde hair that was short on the sides and bad boy long up top. Dimples and a strong chin made gave him the look of a runway model. What can I do for you, Carter?

He smiled, and Molly had to lock her knees to keep them from buckling. Lord, the man, had a presence. Actually, now that I’ve met you I’m reluctant to tell you why I’m here. His smile was charming as hell, and he was so close the warmth of his body was like a physical presence.

She laughed and felt it down to her bones. Now you have to tell me! He was funny, and he turned her on, and that hadn’t happened in a long time.

He sighed and hit her with those stunning blue eyes, a wall of lust slamming into her hard enough to make her catch her breath. I wanted to see when your family would be moving in. My mother is complaining about the construction noise. He laughed, but there didn’t seem to be any humor on his face. She complains when my brothers laugh too loud.

She nodded and gave an apologetic smile. I know, I told Ma it was too much, but she’s all about appearances. They share a smile that only two kids with image conscious mothers could understand.

    "I have one of those,
