IT SEEMED IMPOSSIBLE. Raspberry. The Pixie with the pink hair. Not impossible she was here, but impossible that Felicia had forgotten her for so long.
The Pixie was standing there now, footsteps away, and it felt right to have her close. As if they had been together for years and seen each other every day. Her hair shone in the midday sun, and some strands caught the light as if they were made of glass. She had bangs that cut off just over her eyes, perfectly straight, except for one lock of hair that wanted to go in its own direction.
Raspberry shifted her weight. She was staring back at Felicia, her eyes wide and eager and her lips trembling, almost ready to say something but unsure what.
I can’t believe I forgot about you,
Felicia said.
The Pixie frowned. It was necessary,
she said, in a way that sounded as if it definitely wasn’t.
Necessary?
To keep us apart. They thought that knowing about me would be …
She pursed her lips appealingly.
A distraction?
Felicia said, trying with all her might not to stare.
Yes,
and now Raspberry smiled, making it impossible not to look. Her lips were an intense pink, darker than her hair but with a similar shimmer. They thought you wouldn’t be able to resist me.
Her smile widened.
Felicia thought back to the cathedral where the White Caprice had been tempting her. If instead it had been Raspberry lying there, legs slightly spread, offering herself … all would have been lost.
What is it?
the Pixie said. The tone of her voice had changed. She was no longer smiling. Felicia’s eyes were still locked on her lips. A thousand kisses sprung to mind. She forced herself to look up, into Raspberry’s eyes. They were a bright blue, even lighter than the sky here in the mountains, and they complemented her pink hair.
Looking in her eyes wasn’t any easier; they still made her think of kissing. Felicia blinked a few times and tried to act normal. Who thought I couldn’t resist you?
The other Pixies. Ariel, mostly.
But they let you keep your memories?
Yes, that’s why it’s stupid. If I could function, I’m sure you could too.
With Raspberry so close, Felicia found it difficult to think about anything except how pretty she was. Perhaps they thought …
The Pixie nodded. With your need for…
She put one hand on top of her pelvis and made a circling motion.
That was a mistake. Felicia’s mind went from thinking of relatively chaste kisses to something much more exciting.
Sorry,
Raspberry said and turned to look at the lake that surrounded this little island. So, do you think we’re in the right place? I’ve seen everything here change a dozen times now.
Felicia was glad to have something else to focus on. In profile, the Pixie was no less beautiful. Her hair draped down to between her shoulder blades and disguised the slight bulge where her outfit hid her wings, and though Pixies rarely had large breasts, the front of her clothing strained to conceal something as well.
Gah! Stop staring!
She forced herself to look at the water. When first exiting the house, Felicia had thought the lake to be the same one they had seen when they first arrived. It was still circular and filled most of the flat area, but the entire plateau was no longer the top of the mountain. Instead, it was just a little piece carved out of the side, with more mountain rising into the sky. The path which began at Caprice’s door ran to the edge of the plateau, circled the water and rose into the rocks.
The Door’s there.
Raspberry pointed upward. And it’s reachable, I think.
She looked at Felicia. The Sídhe did this?
Felicia thought of Caprice. More or less.
She looked back at the door which was now closed. The entire house appeared old and unlived-in. Traces of moss were growing around the door and on parts of the latch.
You convinced her to help?
I helped her with a problem of her own.
Felicia wasn’t sure how much detail she should share about Caprice. In return she brought us together, into the right world and the one with the easier path.
Easier? There’s another way?
Yes.
Felicia traced her finger along the door. Moss and dried paint flaked off. In spite of all her recent travelling between worlds and playing with time, it was disconcerting to see the house look as if it hadn’t been used for decades. I’ll tell you later. Can we start moving?
Raspberry nodded. Let me make sure this is full.
She produced a water skin and went to the lake’s edge. I stole it from the village, in case you were wondering. This trip is lasting much longer than I expected.
How long were you waiting?
To Felicia, it felt as if it had been a day or so.
Six days.
Less than it could have been, I suppose.
They followed the path away from the house. At first it mimicked the route Felicia and Caprice had taken yesterday, through this garden was long abandoned, with only wildflowers and unruly bushes in sight. As well, instead of curving behind the house and easing down the mountain, this path circled the lake and rose, becoming narrow, leaving just enough room for one person. Felicia walked behind Raspberry and tried not to watch her too closely.
Tried not to.
Raspberry was smaller than most of the other Pixies, about a foot shorter than Felicia. The tight leather bodice obscured her wings and somehow distracted attention away from the long bulge down her back. The rest of her outfit wasn’t leather, but was also black and still made every effort to hug her body. Especially her legs, which in proportion to her size were long and slender. The effect was dramatic enough that from a distance she would seem quite tall.
Yes, her legs! I saw them in the vision she showed me back in the village square, sitting on a tree branch, swinging her feet, almost exposing …
Felicia shook herself. Is there nothing about her that doesn’t lead my mind into places it shouldn’t go?
And maybe I should walk in front. She’s been able to watch me for months, if not years. Walking behind me wouldn’t be as
