    Introduction

According to the Oxford English dictionary the meaning of ‘safety’ is the condition of being protected from unlikely factors that may cause danger, risk, or injury.

Safety at home (indoor and outdoor) aims at reducing risks which may cause serious injury. It is our intention to protect our family and ourselves from hazard and risk or injury. Serious injury could happen anywhere you are present if you are not careful. So it is wise to look at safety as a whole. It is the objective of this book to reduce or eliminate risk at home whether indoor or outdoor.

Tips will be given to reduce or eliminate the risks associated. Accidents anywhere can be controlled if you take positive steps to avoid the accidents from happening. You can prevent the accident from happening if you are aware of the safety principles. Safety awareness is important and if you stick by the safety tips given in this book you can avoid accidents from happening.

This book serves as a guide to you who might not be aware of hazards which might be presents anywhere you are at. It serves as safety awareness information. By identifying hazards you should know how to tackle the risks that come with it. It is meant for the book for easy reading and not burdens you with terms which are complex. For more in depth study on safety you should consult safety consultants and organizations which focus on safety.

The arrangement of this book is easy to follow. Safety tips will be given in each section. This book is divided into three sections. Section I deals solely on safety at home. A detail discussion on safety at home will be laid out. In section II, a discussion of indoor and outdoor safety will be looked into. In section III, a detail discussion on safety on the road will be laid out. This book aims at giving you guides on how to stay safe wherever you are at, whether you are indoor or outdoor.

    Section I: Safety at Home

Accidents do happen at home—although it is the safest place to be. It is unlikely for accidents happen at home but accidents do happen especially with children and elderly. You should set the atmosphere of free accidents at home. Safety at home need not be as complex as the workplace. You do need simple household safety rules at home to keep accidents from happening. These rules should be informed to all family members.

The top causes of injuries and deaths in homes could be due to:

    Poisoning

    Cuts

    Falls

    Choking, strangling and suffocation

    Fire and burns

    Electrocution

Accidents at home are mainly due to unawareness of safety and carelessness. A place you call home shouldn’t be a place where accidents happen because it provides you with shelter and comfort. But many accidents happen in homes where you least expect them to happen. There are ways to stop accidents at home from happening. We will look into ways to prevent accidents from happening at home. A simple safety rules at home will guide you to identify hazards and risks around the house

In Section I of this book, in the beginning of each chapter, safety tips will be given as safety awareness at home. A home should be the safest place to be at. There shouldn’t be accidents at all at home. But accidents do happen at home from near misses to the ones which lead to fatality. Why do these accidents happen? What are the main causes of accidents at home? Who are the main victims? How do these accidents happen? Where mainly accidents happen at home? One cause of accidents happening at home is lack of safety awareness. Yet the basic cause is carelessness.

We will look at zones in and around the house which pose the most hazards. We will look into what risks which come with these hazards. We will study ways to reduce or eliminate the risks. We will make a home a safe place which is in line with Home sweet home.
