Author

Clare Connelly

Clare Connelly was raised in small-town Australia among a family of avid readers. She spent much of her childhood up a tree, Mills & Boon book in hand. Clare is married to her own real-life hero and they live in a bungalow near the sea with their two children. She is frequently found staring into space - a surefire sign she is in the world of her characters. She has a penchant for French food and ice-cold champagne, and Mills & Boon novels continue to be her favourite ever books. Writing for MIlls & Boon is a long-held dream.

I received an ARC eBook of this book. This is the first book I have read by Clare Connelly as well as being part of Harlequin's new digital romance Imprint "Dare".I thought this was a really well written contemporary romance and I enjoyed the story as well as the characters. I enjoyed seeing how Jack Grant and Gemma Picton's relationship started and then developed throughout the story as well as getting to know more about them as individual characters as well as their pasts/families. I liked Gemma's grandmother and their relationship with one another as well. I look forward to reading more from Harlequin's new Dare Imprint in 2018 as well as looking into this author to see what other books she has written.

The office romance premise of this book, while nothing new, can be very fun when the characters are well-developed and the story is paced to engage and keep the pages turning. The break-neck pace of this story gave me whiplash. There was no build-up, no chance to develop feelings for the characters or become invested in the outcome of the story. There was no ebb and flow of the storyline, no teasing push and pull between the characters, the book started at one speed-setting and never veered from it. Jack was pushy, Gemma was needy; throw in a compulsory, out of left field, Mr. Darcy-Elizabeth Bennett reference; add some confusing point of view switches, and the book that had the potential to be a fun, sexy read, just lost me.

Honestly? I wasn't too sure about this one for the first third or so. I liked Gemma and Jack--they have good chemistry, though he's got major, major issues (definitely not over the death of his wife being a major part of that) and of course there's the work thing, so yeah, they definitely should be resisting with everything they've got...I'm still not 100% clear about what exactly tripped them over the line from resisting is still a go to OMG, we've definitely given that up, I see! So, yeah; that first third? I got why they wanted to be sleeping together, but couldn't quite get on board with why they were actually doing it when all signs pointed to really not a good idea, folks.I'm not even sure where that changed, but somewhere along the line I started to get a glimmer of hmmm, maybe this really could work...maybe. Gemma was definitely falling, but Jack? Still a bit of a mystery, to Gemma and to the reader (though this is a dual POV story, we get far more of it from hers than from his). Then we get to the black moment, and oh yeah, it's black. Even the US women's hockey team winning gold couldn't quite get me out of the funk that their relationship crisis put me in--I had to quick finish the book before the medal ceremony, just to put myself in the proper frame of mind! No worries, though--Jack pulled out all the stops--and his head out of his butt--and gave us all one heck of an HEA that nearly made me forget about all of the earlier agony he put us through earlier.Almost. ;)Plus--kudos to Ms. Connelly for not vilifying Jack's dead wife, my personal pet peeve in widow/widower stories! It's always nice to see a romance author who believes that it could be possible to find love twice in a lifetime <3 :) I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for her next book in the Dare line!Rating: 4 stars / A-

Off Limits by Clare ConnollySizzle, steam and sensual delight are part and parcel of this story. And, what a story it was!In-house counsel, Lady Gemma Picton, has worked for billionaire widow Jack Grant for two years when suddenly the dynamics of their relationship change. Jack has always been a challenge to work for with his busy work schedule and the flirting, boozing and many women he moves through. But when he begins to focus on Gemma…oh my…! This book is explicit with encounters in and out of the bedroom making for a tantalizing read that I could not put down. I liked Gemma and her willingness to reach out and take what she wanted even though it meant she might not ultimately see her ending up where she hoped to be. I liked the fact that Jack, hound that he was, began to eventually realize that the future he had envisioned for himself might be more and better than he thought it would be. The two do get their HEA but have to jump through a few hoops before it comes to fruition. Oh, Gemma’s granny was someone I wouldn’t mind being compared to at some point in the not too distant future – what a role model she provided for Gemma! Thank you to NetGalley, Barclay Publicity and Harlequin DARE for the ARC – This is my honest review. 5 Stars
