The Ultimate Guide to Dwarf Rabbit Care - Xeniya Bochan

    Characteristics of rabbits

RABBITS ARE CHARACTERIZED by fast metabolism and consumption of large amounts of oxygen. They are sensitive to overheating, direct sunlight, high humidity, draft, dampness, high ammonia conditions, hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide and dust. Ideal environment for rabbits: humidity should remain within 50% level, temperature required by the rabbit’s ranges from 10°C to 26°C.

Rabbits are usually housed in the cages. The cage acts as their own private space where they can sleep in and go to the toilet in. The rest of the time tend to spend with owner. For times you are not around and when your rabbits are ‘free ranging’ they need to be supervised. They do a good job of keeping themselves clean and can be trained to toileting in a litter box.

Rabbits tend to be fearful and timid by nature. Loud noises will scare your rabbit, so use a calm, low voice. Don’t yell or shout — and discourage others from doing so around your rabbit. Rabbits are fragile animals who must be handled carefully. They enjoy when you pet them on their heads and down the back, they dislike being touched - their dewlap (under the chin).

How to choose a rabbit cage

THE MORE SPACIOUS THE cage, the healthier and happier your pet will be. Recommended cage size: 70 cm length, 50 cm breadth and 35-40 cm
