    Prelude

That day branches were torn away and crashed to the ground, smothering the leaves trying to escape the torrents of rain and wind. The bluster of autumn winds grew to a pre-winter storm.

Nightfall. Lights red and white shining and flickering amid sheets of silver wetness, as vehicles steadied their way through the premature darkness. The wind unrelenting,

I flicked the demister on as the wipers clunked and swished, slowing to a safer speed, hoping all around me would too be mindful of the danger. I thought momentarily of pulling over and sitting out the storm. Behind and in front, cars too close – just keep going – keep watchful.

A siren, then another, rushing past, blurs of light and sound. Screeching wheels. Oh God, please let no-one be hurt.

The road closed off, flashing lights, traffic at a stand-still. The rain and darkness all blending in shining flakes and streaks. We wait.

Slowly we are beckoned to move forward, white plastic men in fluorescent orange, guiding our way with torches. We can see their grim faces, lit momentarily by their torchlight as we pass, slowly, silently, even though the wind is still howling and the rain beats its incessant rhythm.

We glimpse the horror of the mangled cars and the gnarled broken trees, white figures desperately trying to cover bodies and tend the injured. As we pass slowly, fleeting thoughts of sympathy and grief for those who have lost their lives, hope for the injured, then relief – it isn’t us.

    Its not our turn tonight.

Home feels so good, the coffee tastes better, the lounge more comfortable, the weather has calmed and we feel so safe.
