Chap-1---alt.tifCHAPTER ONE
‘KELLY, WILL YOU please get a towel for me while I finish bathing Bryce?’ Vicky called as Kelly passed the nursery on her way to the lounge.
‘Sure,’ Kelly shouted. It was not long before that the towel came flying through the bathroom door, hitting Vicky on the head before landing on the floor.
‘Next time, use your hands, Kelly, not your power,’ Vicky called out to her as she bent down to pick it up.
‘No need to shout. I am standing right here. Sorry, I was just testing to see if I still had it.’ Kelly said, coming into the bathroom to splash water on little Bryce. Bryce Carper had been born on the fourth of June eighteen months ago. He was a healthy, happy baby, and everyone loved him to bits. He had straight brown hair like his dad, but he definitely had his mother’s looks and her charm. Big brown eyes looked back at Kelly as she made funny noises while playing with one of Bryce’s bath toys.
‘Kelly, you know how we feel about using your powers around the baby. We don’t want him to know about all that stuff,’ Vicky said, waving her hands in the air and making Bryce giggle. ‘Not yet, anyway. He’s too young,’ Lifting a giggling Bryce out of the bath, Vicky wrapped him in the towel, and carried him to his bed so that she could dress him.
‘Sorry, Vicky, I will remember next time,’ Kelly said, following suit. Vicky smiled at Kelly; how she loved the twins! They had become so much a part of their lives that Alex and herself did not know what they would do if they decided to live elsewhere. Kelly was quite grown up; her figure had changed into that of a beautiful young adult. James had started filling out with muscles in all the right places, and they were both growing up to be beautiful. They had also decided that it was time to have their own rooms, which forced Alex and Vicky to build another bedroom in their house, making it a four-bedroom house. Of course, Kelly had to have an en suite as well, and she was very happy to see that she got just that! Sixteen was supposed to be a difficult age for teenagers. Kelly and James seemed to be flying through it with no difficulty at all. Maybe it was because they were twins – well, for whatever reason, Vicky was glad she didn’t have ‘normal’ teens.
‘Are the guys back from the mall yet?’ Vicky asked, putting on Bryce’s shirt.
‘No, I think they went to buy the whole shop, not just what they needed!’ Kelly said, making faces at Bryce and causing him to laugh.
‘Well, you know how the two of them are whenever they get together. They could spend a week in the shops and not know that a week has just passed by. There you are, Bryce, my angel. All done,’ Vicky said, putting her face into his neck and giving him a big kiss. Bryce wiggled and giggled. He was so cute that Kelly just wanted to eat him up.
‘Are the two of you going to visit the children’s home on Sunday?’ Vicky asked. Leaving Bryce with Kelly, she went into the bathroom to let the water out and clean up.
‘I’m not sure what our plans are. I think we might. It’s difficult going there not knowing where Joshua is or why he left so suddenly,’ Kelly shouted to Vicky. It still confused her and James every time they thought about the way Josh had left. Sister Mary had said that he had received a letter in the mail one day, and Joshua had seemed withdrawn after reading it. Two days later, he had simply announced that he was moving out. He had just turned eighteen, so the sisters had felt that they could not stop him. Even though Sister Mary had questioned Josh, he had seemed reluctant to say anything about what was in the letter. Joshua had just said that it was time for him to leave, that the letter had been from a friend who had said that they had left a house to him, and that he could move into it whenever he wanted. When Sister Mary had asked where it was, Josh had said that where it was, was not important. What was important was that he had a roof over his head and that he would be safe. Joshua had packed his stuff, said his goodbyes, and left, never to be seen again. Many times, Kelly and James had discussed it and could not come up with any logical answers. It was as if Joshua had simply disappeared. James had tried to sense him using his powers, but that had not helped. He had said on a number of occasions that it was as if Joshua didn’t want to be found. Kelly always felt very sad when James said that because, to her, Joshua was her ‘big brother’, and James would not have understood what Joshua had meant to her. She missed him very much. James sensed the sadness in her sometimes, so he tried not to speak of Joshua. He too missed his ‘big brother’. Then Bryce had arrived, and Kelly could channel her energy into him. It was not long until Kelly seemed herself again, and with the help of little Bryce, Kelly’s sadness grew less, and she started smiling more. That made James happier. Days had passed into months, and soon it had been two years, and there had still not been any word from Joshua. Kelly and James could not help wondering just what had happened to him.
‘Do you think we should go and look for Daddy and James?’ Kelly said, getting onto the bed next to Bryce and cuddling him.
Bryce cuddled up to Kelly and put his hand into her hair and started
