    CHAPTER 1

S UMMER BREEZE, WHAT joy the season brings. Warm temperatures blowing cool air over a sandy beach. What a perfect day to sit under an umbrella, sipping piña colada. However, not for Charles, who is packing his clothes into large Tupperware bins surrounding his room.

Mom, can you bring up my New York Giants sweater from the dryer? said Charles while standing by the double doors to his bedroom looking over the balcony.

A New York native, Charles Whitaker Jr., an African American student, will be attending Harvard University with an academic scholarship. Brown-complexioned, dark-brown-eyed, and arrogant, he knows he will become a doctor one day. Following the footsteps of his father, Charles wants to make him proud, being just like him.

Here is your sweater, Charlie. I brought you some new socks to take with you. I know you're thinking why, but you know I'm very particular about your appearance, said Mrs. Whitaker, speaking firmly.

Lena Whitaker---a petite brown-skinned woman---is Charles's mother, whom he resembles. She a retired English professor, a successful author, and a graduate of Harvard University. While attending Harvard, she met fellow student Charles Whitaker Sr., whom she later married, sharing two sons. Raised in a poor environment as a child in South Carolina, Lena considers herself a hard worker, being successful in achieving her dreams. However, her arrogance causes her to look down upon others beneath her.

Thanks, Mom, I already know, but trust me, I wouldn't embarrass you dressing a like a hoodlum, Charles says jokingly but serious.

Lena then chuckled, placing her hands on his shoulders, and said, I'm so proud to see the man that you've grown into. You are just like your father when he was your age, so ambitious. Strive for the best to accomplish your dreams. Let nothing stand in your way, including girls, with an aggressive tone.

Mom, relax! I am focused. However, I can balance having a social life and studying as well, said Charles, slowly removing her hands from his shoulders.

I trust you, and I know you will meet interesting people at Harvard. Maybe you can meet a nice girl there, she responded, hoping he would. Enough of that, let's go downstairs and check on your peach cobbler and one more thing,
