What I know of my Great grandfather is that he was married to Machabo and they had eight children, my grandfather McKenzie, father to my father Gabriel was their second son. MacKenzie was a very loving family oriented man. He married Salome Mosoane in 1944 and they had six children. MacKenzie had a remarkable adoration towards his grandchildren. I remember how he habitually bought us banana’s every day when he got of the train at Dewildt station, North West of Pretoria. He was a charismatic, tall, dark and handsome man and a great church goer.

I was brought up by my grandparents so I learned to pray at an early age. We lived with my aunt Theresa and her four daughters, the second youngest being Priska, she and I did everything together even dressed alike. My grandmother Salome was the eldest daughter in a family of 5 children and was very devoted to her church; a disciplinarian and a tireless home maker who lived every fabric of her existence for her children and grandchildren. We lived in a very close community which included relatives and everyone knew each other. Children respected adults and adults treated all children as their own, on many occasions Priska and I would be playing in the street at sunset and would be sent home by the neighbors.
