About this ebook

Each and every word of this book has been the torment that i have carried in my
head since Dee passed away, i have been encouraged by others to pursue writing this
story, as it has touched so many people that i know. To experience loosing a Loved
one, after so much struggle, and also the achievement that was made, has been, and also must
be one of the worst experiences in a persons life, i know that it has been in mine. This book
has been the therapy, of offl oading what has been in my head, to release me into a new life, i
believe that this book was meant to be, having Spiritual Guidance along the way, and not once
did i stop to think what i would have to write next, my hand just went with a fl ow, i have never
experienced this before, looking back now at my story, i am fi nding it unbelievable that i have
actually done this, it has not yet hit me, However it to me has been my story to tell, because
my heart was telling me so . .

    Dedicated to Dee

This dedication is for tall, dark, handsome Dee.

He had enormous spirit to continue in his life and pursue his goals until the end.

He was my soul mate; he still is. Even in spirit, I feel him close; our love will never die, now at peace and laid to rest. He will always be remembered in my heart.

I love you my sweetheart until the end.

    Chapter One

    ornaments.tif

It was a dull Sunday evening, and I was waiting to go out with friends. We had decided to go to a club in town, buying drinks and settling down for the evening; the music came on for everyone to dance. I didn’t want to dance, so was left looking after handbags; then a voice that came from behind me asked why I was not dancing. And this is when I met Dee. We shook hands and introduced ourselves. Then my friends came back to chat for a while; the music got louder and my friends took off again, the dance floor was too crowded for me, so I got up to dance by our table where there was more space, and then Dee came to join me. He also introduced me to his friends. The evening went on and we danced together but keeping a distance also; he took my phone number but did not commit himself afterwards to call me, and I forgot about him until I again saw him, almost going through the same motion again, so I thought maybe he already has a lady in his life and that’s why there was no commitment but only to dance and leave at the end of the evening. This happened a number of times throughout the year, and every time we were both without partners.

One day, out of the blue, he called very early on a Monday morning at 6.30 a.m. from what I remember. I was quite shocked and thought it a bit of a cheek as I hadn’t seen him for a while, and he asked to see me. I agreed and we made arrangements to see each other at the weekend. I had told my friend that we had made arrangements for the weekend. She asked if he was my type and I said that actually he’s not. He is too skinny actually, not my type at all, but I thought he was very polite and friendly. I had no other plans, so I thought why not, and we kept in touch throughout the week. He had two jobs going and was quite busy, working double shifts at times, day and night work, but I said nothing about it at the time; he never seemed too tired to chat on the phone.

The weekend came upon us, and I packed a few things in case of staying and didn’t quite know what to expect. He didn’t have a car, so I drove to his place where he shared a house with friends. I arrived later than expected, and he was waiting for me. He had cooked a meal which was ready when I arrived; one of his friends said that he had not seen him so happy in a long while, and I was privileged. I thought nothing of it, settling down listening to music into the evening, chatting and getting to know each other; he then said let’s go out, so we went to a club and had drinks and danced for the rest of the night, and to my surprise, he was actually really good, fun to be with. I had a great time and it was late at night, so I stayed at his place. I had been drinking all evening and slept until late the next morning only to have an awful migraine. I looked like death. I thought this would put Dee off, but he was very nice; he had been up for ages and his plans were to go shopping, but oh no, I could not lift my head up off the pillow, so I stayed in to rest. He borrowed my car; he was itching to drive in it. He loved four-wheel drives and lucky for him, I had a black Vitara, so he went out, and I stayed behind.

After a few hours, I felt better, and we also had plans for that night to go out again to another club with my friends; however, we left early as Dee didn’t feel comfortable for some reason. Also there was another woman there making eyes at Dee and stopped him when he was buying a drink at the bar. I didn’t like that very much, and I said to her to keep her hands off and threatened her. My friends were shocked and said, ‘My god, Lynne, what came over you?’ And to be honest, I was shocked with myself for being so outspoken; it is not like me at all, but this particular woman was bad, and I didn’t like the way she approached Dee. She has a thing about black guys, and Dee was tall, slim, and handsome, so in a way I didn’t blame her. However, we left again into the night getting a taxi back home to Dee’s place. That night, before we went into the house, he swept me off my feet and carried me through the door and then tripped over, and I went flying. We both laughed, scrambled upstairs, and slept together for the first time. I was very nervous, but I could see that Dee was not. It was then that I was developing feelings for Dee; he just seemed so good to be around. It was Sunday. We slept together again. He made breakfast, and we watched TV for a while; then late in the afternoon, we went to watch football in the pub with his friends. I have never done that before; it felt strange. I was sitting with a big group of black guys watching football; this was the first for me and also the first time dating a black guy like Dee, but they all seemed friendly enough. After football, we went onto another bar that played music that I like to dance to; we met more of Dee’s friends, and we had drinks again, but I couldn’t keep up, so I had a line of drinks on the side at the end of the evening. Dee saw that I hadn’t been drinking them, made a comment that I don’t drink much, and then he drank them all one after the other, saying we can’t waste them; little did I realise at that moment what was in store for me in time. It was another great evening, returning home to Dees’ and thinking what a blast of a weekend I have had. Dee has been so generous and good fun; he absolutely swept me off my feet, and I felt so happy. I hadn’t felt happy like this for a long time. I thought he was great. On returning home on Monday, Dee had called and left a message to say that he wanted to get a 4x4 wheel drive, and he may have one by the end of the week. I thought he was pulling my leg, but no, he had got himself a loan and a red 4 x 4 wheel drive to show off in. After knowing Dee just for two weeks, at this moment in time I was beginning to see that his character was very outgoing. And he could be just a little bit off; especially with his style of clothes, he would be outstanding, and he knew this, but again, it didn’t sway me at this moment in time.

    Chapter Two

We met again and spent time together every other weekend. I worked in between weekends and kept up with phone calls during the week. Dee’s car was very nice, and we went to a car wash where there were a group of guys in an old garage, waiting. We parked up, and I was about to get out of the car and the hose went on to start washing the car; so jumping back in, I locked the door and watched the guys do their routine washing around the car; there were six guys, all in a line in sequence like a caterpillar and doing small marching steps around the car—one had the hose, one was washing, one was wiping, all together cleaning to their music, all in step behind each other. It was great. What a way to clean the car! It was immaculate when they finished. This was on a Sunday evening; afterwards, again we went to another club, stayed until late and noticed this time that Dee had so much to drink, and at the end of the evening got into the car to drive with friends in the back. Whilst driving home, the police followed us for a while; however, it seems that I may have been the reason for them not pulling us over. As I was a white person, they went on their way. Lucky for Dee! He was well over the limit of drinking. That was for sure.

A couple of months went by and Dee seemed stressed on the weekend I stayed over. He said he had a problem with the landlord as he had not paid his rent, and he was on the verge of being thrown out of his room. The next day being a Monday, the landlord knocked on the bedroom door, and he was very cross with Dee. I don’t think that he knew that I was in Dee’s room. As he tried to open the door, I was scared. He was shouting for Dee to come out. Eventually, Dee got up and went outside to see the landlord. I peeked outside and could not believe my eyes; Dee, a grown man, was on his knees, begging to this man. I didn’t believe that he could belittle himself in such a way, but he was an African man, pleading on hands and knees, begging and saying that he would pay his rent. I was shocked. He came in after a while, saw my expression, and apologised. He then dressed to go to work, and I went home.

That night Dee had left his car outside as normal only to find that his car had been clamped by the landlord so he could not go to work. It is obvious that the landlord thought that Dee could afford a car, but not the rent, so took it upon himself to try and teach Dee a lesson, with a note to vacate the premises ASAP. Dee drew out some cash. It was not near enough the amount that he owed but gave him time. During the next few days, Dee asked for my help and came up with the idea to pack up his things and to put into storage using my car to transfer his things; we managed to get most things packed, all but his clothes. So leaving to go home, I left Dee to decide what he would do next. Bearing in mind his car was still clamped, that night he managed to unclamp his car and get all of his clothes and the rest of his belongings piled in his car; he did a runner. He parked up in a multi-storey car park on the top level and slept in his car, and that is what he did for the rest of the week. In between his two jobs and the pub, most of that week he sounded to me like he had too much to drink, with loud music in the background. However, the next time when I called him, there was no answer. I tried again and again; he then called me eventually. He had a crash in the car. He had said that he was stressed and going around a roundabout and tried to miss an old lady crossing the road and crashed into a lamppost, fracturing his wrist, so has been to the hospital most of the time waiting for x-rays etc. until now. However, I later found out that the story was not true, that he had been drinking and going around the roundabout too fast and hit the lamppost; hence his car was a write off, not roadworthy after that, and later learned from his brother that he had already written off two other cars in the past, drinking and driving.

When I first met Dee, he had said a few things to me about properties he had back home, a house, and that his parents lived in a big house and went to an extreme of what I now know were blatant lies, just to try and impress me, but little did he realise that I am a person who does not live for material things and lies. I speak from my heart and would never ever lie to anyone, but now I was beginning to wonder what have I got on my hands with Dee; however, he managed to get another car, and then I said that he could move in with me. He had a sofa that came in handy, but driving along the motorway, he thought the sofa was on the trailer behind the car. If he hadn’t have had a drink and talked so much to his friend who was in the car, he might have noticed that the sofa was not on the trailer and that it had fallen off and was on the road about ten miles back. That was the reason for this night drawing home late, oh dear, what to think! However, we all laughed honestly. What next . . . Little did I know at this time that Dee had been cautioned twice in the past for drinking and driving and also that his drinking would become a problem, a big problem for our relationship. Unfortunately, for me, my feelings for Dee were very strong, and I didn’t know anything really about African ways, especially the men. Dee had said that he loved me but only when he had been drinking which most of the time was at weekends. During the week and while not having a drink, it was very different. It’s like he had two personalities, and this was going to be difficult, but it got worse. However, on a different note, Dee was a generous person and remembering the past Valentine’s Day smothered me with lovely gifts, including a beautiful sheepskin jacket which must have cost a little bit of money. Besides, the other presents that he surprised me with; he was a guy with good manners and kept himself well.

    Chapter Three

    ornaments.tif

Dee started to settle in with me, and we were getting on really well, it was a distance for Dee to travel to work and he still had his two jobs, but it was beginning to get difficult for him and most of the time he would sleep, also his sleep pattern was more during the day when he would rest, and he would sit and watch his TV all night, he apologised for that at times, and said that he was used to working night shifts, so eventually he gave up his night job, he also tried to transfer his job to a more local area, but there were no posts available at the time.

So he settled for just the one job during the day, which would be a late shift, starting at 1.00 p.m.-9.00 p.m. every day. Apparently the reason he was able to work a late shift, was because he had told his employer that he had a condition, heart condition I do believe, as he always looked tired and underweight, I must admit he was a little bit skinny, but I thought nothing of it, he was well respected at his work place, and he had a very responsible job, in fact he
