He Didn't Go Alone - Marilyn Clay

CHAPTER ONE

Iknew something was wrong when Don kissed me goodbye that morning. Not that my husband did not always kiss me goodbye when he left for work each day. It’s just that there was something different this time. I couldn’t put my finger on what. I just felt it, that’s all.

You going to be okay, hon? he had asked.

Sure, why not?

Don is the staff photographer for a cattle magazine in Kansas City. This morning, instead of going in to the office, he was driving to the airport and catching a plane to Fort Worth, Texas. He often made quick trips, a day, sometimes two, to attend a state fair or livestock show in order to take pictures for the magazine. Don and I hadn’t yet been married a year, but we had lived together, on and off, for about two years before taking the big plunge. By now, I was used to his short trips, but I still liked it when he seemed concerned about me when he was going to be away for a few days.

I’ve got lots to do, I said, smiling up at him. You’ll be back tomorrow, right?

He nodded. First thing. If I have to stay longer, I’ll call you.

He, of course, snatched the can away from me and chased me down the hallway, squirting the stuff all over me. We were both laughing and squealing like a couple of kids. Then, when he caught up with me, he scooped me up in his arms and carried me back to the bathroom and after peeling off my clothes, rubbed his naked gooey body all over me. Then we took another shower. This time together.

After that, we adjourned to the bedroom. I sighed again just thinking about it. Don was great in bed. The best ever. I always enjoyed lovemaking with him, I thought with a smile as I began to tug at the sheets.

But, suddenly . . . the niggling fear that something was not quite right hit me again. Why did I suddenly have this uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach that something was wrong? What did I sense about Don’s kiss this morning that was different?

Heading into the bathroom to dump the sheets into the hamper and get fresh ones from the linen closet, I was still thinking about it when I nearly tripped over Don’s
