T he day started with a beautiful sunrise, and there was not a cloud in the sky. I was playing with my brother Alex in the garden. The trees were enormous, and there were flowerbeds close to the gallery. A little further away, Grandma had a vegetable garden close to the fence. My parents had installed some swings and a slide that ended in a sandbox.
There was a picnic table under one of the huge trees. Under another one, there were two benches with a little table in between. Granddad’s hammock was on the other side, hanging from two big tree limbs.
Mom used to sit a lot in that area, drinking ice tea, after a long week of work. She admired the radiant colors and the quietness of the end of the day. When Grandma joined her, Alex and I would cuddle up to them and listen to Grandma talk about my dad’s childhood.
Sometimes, we thought the stories were fairy tales, but we never missed a word. Dad would join us when he got home from work. He loved the stories too. He used to say that our mom became part of the stories.
Alex and I dreamed of living such stories. My parents said we would make our own stories, and we were always waiting for something unusual to happen. We had no idea what it would be, but we always looked around the garden for an opening into a magic, enchanted world.
My brother and I loved playing in the garden. There were so many places to explore. The places all stayed the same, but our imaginations would make them look different every day. When the sun changed direction, everything took on
