    Introduction

    Efforts by Educational Psychology researchers, to understand the reasoning behind why some students excel in their academic pursuits, and others do not, is ongoing.  Two concepts that form part of their investigations into the process of academic achievement are global self-esteem and academic self-efficacy.  Many researchers have endorsed the importance of these two concepts in developing academically successful students (Pajares, 2002).

    Global self-esteem and academic self-efficacy are thought by Educational Psychologists to be two essential psychological constructs that form part of students’ motivational learning and academic performance (Bandura, 1993).  The concept of self-efficacy is thought to be the most powerful determinant of behavioural change (Bandura, 1977).  Researchers believe that assessing students’ self-beliefs can provide schools with important insight about their pupils’ academic motivation, behaviour, and future choices, since the beliefs students develop in school about their academic capabilities help determine what they do with the knowledge and skills they have learned (Pajares, 2002).

    While the concepts of global self-esteem and self-efficacy may be related they have different meanings.  Global self-esteem refers to one’s level of confidence about one’s self, whereas academic self-efficacy refers to one’s level of confidence about one’s ability to perform academically.  There are conflicting views with regard to the relationship between these two concepts in academic circles and among researchers (Pajares, 2002).  Some researchers find a significant positive correlation between the
