Halloween is the night when the witches come out of their hiding places riding their broomsticks. The night when the wind blows the flames of bonfires high into the darkness of the sky. Halloween is the night when Maddison was born just ten years ago.

Her hair is shiny like a raven’s wings. Her eyes black with the sparkle of diamonds. Maddison’s dream has always been to become a witch. Her best friend Cordelia has told her many times she looked like one. But Maddison’s mother is not so sure.

‘She looks too nice to be a witch. Real witches do not exist, anyway’, she would tell Cordelia to her daughter’s disappointment. ‘I’ll make her a nice costume for the Halloween school party and she can pretend she’s one.’

‘Not the same’, Maddison was disappointed.

‘If you were a witch you’d need a black cat and you know how bad that would be for Dad. He’s allergic to cats. A cat in the house would bring him the sneezes and would give him a runny nose.’

That seemed to put paid to her wishes. She loved her Dad and would do nothing to upset him.

On her way to bed she went into the lounge to kiss him good night.

‘Mum says real witches do not exist and that if I wanted to be a witch I’d need a black cat’, she told him.

‘You’d need more than a black cat. To be a witch you have to be able to see the Green Flash.

The Green Flash! What could that be?

‘According to a medieval legend it’s a green light that flashes ever so briefly when the sun goes to sleep. Then, if you watch carefully, without blinking your eyes, you can see it. But only if you’re a witch.’

Maddison felt a thud in her heart. Next time she met Cordelia she told her about The Green Flash. The medieval story sounded grand. Grand and mysterious!

‘My Dad also says that real witches have POWERS’.

‘How wonderful! What would you do if you had POWERS?’

Maddison did not have to think hard.

‘I’d make a big wart grow at the end of Roger’s nose.’

Roger was the school bully whose favourite pastime was to explode empty bags of crisps in her face.

Cardelia applauded. ‘It would serve him right. Now I wish you could be a real witch.’

The following morning when Maddison started for school, she heard the miau of a cat as she opened the porch door. And there half hiding behind the milk bottles she spotted a black cat looking at her with a smile on his face. There was something strange about this cat that kept closing one eye as if winking at her.

‘Let me in’, he said in a soft voice.

Was she dreaming? Was there somebody speaking those words?

‘It is I’, said the black cat with a slight bow of his head. ‘I’m Ebony and have come to help you Just let me in’, he insisted.

This was too strange to be true but Maddison obeyed and stealthily they climbed the stairs to her bedroom.

‘Under the bed you go and don’t come out. When I come back from school I’ll bring you a saucer of milk if you’re good.’ she told him.

‘And a few sops if you can manage it. Ebony will never get you into trouble’, he reassured her. ‘And don’t tell anybody about me.’

Temptation was great, but she resisted sharing her secret even with Cordelia.

When she returned home Maddison found Ebony sitting on her father’s lap. He did not have a runny nose. Neither was he sneezing. On the contrary, he seemed to have found a great friend in Ebony.

‘This is a miracle if I ever saw one’, said her mother.

Maddison gave a scolding look at Ebony that meant:’ I told you to stay under my bed till I came back!’

But Ebony closed one eye again and gave her a reassuring grin.

After tea Maddison and Cordelia went to the recreation ground to watch the sun set. Eyes peeled they waited for the Green Flash to appear. The sun started to hide in the distance spreading its gold and orange rays over the earth.

The two friends remained silent while this was happening. When the sun finally disappeared Cordelia was the first to speak.

‘I didn’t see anything. Did you? Did you see the Green Flash?

Maddison did not answer. Her eyes riveted in the distance, she started to walk home.

‘Don’t be disappointed Maddy’, said her friend,’ the Green Flash is only a story. A medieval legend like your dad said.’

Halloween came. Late afternoon on the thirty first of October, Maddison and Cordelia made their way to the school where the party took place. Maddison wore a purple velvet cloak, hat of the same colour and pointy black shoes, with Ebony in her arms. Cordelia was dressed in an all black costume. Two little witches and a black cat on their way to a Halloween party.

Maddison was in a quiet mood. Was something worrying her?

Cordelia always ready to support her friend told her:

‘It doesn’t matter if you cannot be a real witch. We’ll have a nice party all the same’

Shortly after they arrived at the school playground the bonfire was lit. The burning
