AUTHOR’S OPENING REMARKS
glyph.pngConsciously or sometimes unconsciously, personal-fulfillment is our ultimate dream on earth. We naturally strive to live fulfilled lives but we are not quite sure of what fulfillment means, let alone what it really takes to achieve it. Even to those who have some understanding of it, goal posts for achieving personal-fulfillment surprisingly appear to keep shifting or prove to be elusive as we move towards them. This brings about confusion around the matter of self-fulfillment. What then can we refer to as personal-fulfillment and how do we get to that beacon of life’s collective aspirations? Personal-fulfillment is a state of well-being in which our finest accomplishments as individuals are accompanied by a deep sense of peace and satisfaction within ourselves. It is the kind of achievement that gives us a sense of championship or stardom coupled with a sustainable sense of peace and satisfaction. In short personal-fulfillment is the co-existence of high achievement and peace of mind or satisfaction. Sometimes it appears only imaginary or ideal to find a celebrity who also enjoys the true peace of mind and enjoys his sleep like a baby but I want to say that this peaceable achievement is real and achievable. Personal-fulfillment is the collective aim of all our struggles, tears, cheers, imaginations and endeavors. It is the reason why we rise up early and sleep late. We want to minimize dissatisfaction and maximize satisfaction in our lives. The challenge is that, though it is a reality, personal-fulfillment does not come cheap. There is a process that takes you there. I want to give you a preview of the unfolding insight this book seeks to provide. The climax of the process towards personal-fulfillment revolves around "discovering your life’s purpose and resorting to your natural gift". I want to further say that your purpose reveals your natural gift and your gift reveals your purpose. The two are twins and once you discover them you have discovered the key to personal-fulfillment. Either of the two can become a starting point in your life for, in my view, they are two sides of the same coin. The purpose of this book is therefore to help you:
a) Understand the common process of personal-fulfillment and all its stages
b) Understand the harmony between your purpose and your gift and their inevitable role in personal-fulfillment
c) Discover your life’s purpose
d) Determine your natural gift using the gift detection instrument
e) Get it right first-time and take concrete steps towards personal-fulfillment in your own life
Your life must accomplish something great, a landmark for yourself and for humanity. Remember the landmarks that were bequeathed to us by Socrates, Isaac Newton, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross (1926-2004), among others. Now it’s your turn! There is a global assignment that you, as a member of the Global Village, must execute. This assignment is called a purpose and, together with your gift, looms very large in the process towards personal-fulfillment. Your purpose is the natural assignment that God gave you to perform on earth. It is both the immediate and long-term impact of the work that you are expected to do according to God’s deployment. It is the work that you need to do and the outcome or impact of that work to improve the welfare of humanity. Your purpose is the reason why you were created, the reason why you are there. It must be the beacon of your life—the light that keeps you on track until you reach it. Each one of us has a purpose which he or she must fulfill here on earth. You may undertake the same professional training as somebody else but that does not necessarily mean that you share the same purpose. Your purpose is not necessarily in line with what you studied at school, college or university. When it comes to purpose you need to give your life a hard look to determine whether you are on course or not. If not, you need some realignment between your purpose and your current engagement. It is a natural assignment. It is not something that education imposed on you. It is not an accident. It is God’s plan for your life and you need to discover and comply with this plan. Reporting after largely accomplishing her purpose, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, the legendary South African female musician triumphantly said;
I knew that I had a purpose here on earth, whether I stayed in a shack, or my mom was a domestic worker or whatever¹
This purpose can not be created by us but must be discovered and then pursued in the course of our lives. What we can only do is to engage in the process of discovering and not creating a purpose for our lives. God has already assigned us a purpose which we must live out. As an individual your purpose is already there. Once we have discovered this purpose we need to commit the rest of our lives to it. A decision to ignore our individual purposes and pursue other engagements that fall outside our true purposes will prejudice us of the joy, celebration, contentment and the success that purpose-fulfillment is meant to give us. Your purpose is not as abstract as you may imagine. This book will help you simplify and demystify this important concept of the purpose. Your purpose is in fact your overarching assignment in life. God has already given you the necessary or commensurate capacity to meet the demands of living out that purpose. The capacity God has given you to accomplish your purpose is called your gift—your finest natural ability. After reflecting intensely on her life, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross (1926-2004), an internationally renowned psychiatrist, researcher and writer in the field of thanatology (the study of death) who is also known primarily for her theory of the five stages in the dying process, discovered that her life’s purpose was:
to become a healer of minds and bodies².
In her own words Elisabeth said;
I didn’t fully realize it at the time but the goal of my life, was profoundly molded by this experience—to help produce, in the next generation, more mother Teresas and less Hitlers.³
In my study of personal-fulfillment I have discovered the 5 steps that we normally go through in order to reach the pinnacle of personal-fulfillment and, as noted before, the discovery of your purpose is the climax of this process leading to personal-fulfillment. This book takes you through all the 5 steps but my obligation in this book is to help you shorten the process as much as possible in your own life. The trip to Canaan, in the bible, could have taken a few days but it ended up taking 40 years because of some complications and challenges. I encourage you to get it right first-time. It would be important for you to identify your present position among the steps and determine how far you are from your personal-fulfillment. Remember that the purpose is discovered and not created. What is most important at the end of your reflection is to discover your purpose, pursue it and reach personal-fulfillment. Once you have discovered your purpose make a plan to pursue it. According to Jim Rohn (1930-2009)
If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much.
Take note that our life’s purposes have variations—discover your own. Your purpose is a niche. In a sense it is the only one of its kind. It is the only thing that can yield for you
