Chapter 1
L YNN KNEW THIS DAY would come but she thought she had at least two more years. She sat on the couch and sat Chrissy next to her. ‘How to explain to a three-year-old, date rape.’ She looked at her precious little girl.
The man who is your father hurt me. I did not want to see him again. I did not know I was going to have you until he was completely out of my life. I did not tell him because I did not want to ever see him again. I don’t want you to not have a father I just haven’t been thinking about it. I will not just choose anybody though. We will have to work together on this and it will be a joint decision. When I decide to get married is when I will contact the man who fathered you. It will be your decision if you want to meet him then.
Lynn had no idea her own mother laid on the floor of her salon dying as she explained to her daughter why she didn’t have a father. The phone rang as she prepared dinner. Mommy, its uncle Jack.
Chrissy brought the phone into the kitchen.
Hey, big brother, how are you?
She looked at Chrissy as her eyes puddled. Oh, yes I’ll call Marilyn. I’ll let you know if we get a better flight. I’ll get back to you in a few minutes.
She hung up the phone then turned off the stove. She took a deep breath to get herself composed. Chris, we have to get dinner a little later. Uncle Jack just told me that grandma died and I have to call Aunt Marilyn and we have to go to Georgia.
That’s all she managed to say without breaking down. She wasn’t sure how much Chrissy understood but she sat quietly as Lynn made phone calls and got herself together to make the trip to Georgia. She called for pizza and managed to eat a couple of bites so Chrissy would eat.
Through it all Chrissy was a three-year-old adult. Lynn was very proud of her and did not hesitate to tell her so once they were back home. Now was the time Lynn felt she really needed a husband. While she was home her father and brother were her strength but now she was alone with no one to share her feelings with. She felt there was unfinished business between her and her mother. She ran to her sister in New York when she felt her mother didn’t want her. They never talked about her choice to have her baby. Her father told her that her mother was very proud of her but she had never heard the words from her mother’s lips. She knew the hurt would always be deep inside. There was no going back now.
As Lynn had her heartbreak about her mother; Jack was learning there was much more going on in his mother’s life. She had befriended Sallie Hardison hoping for a daughter-in-law.
This young woman, a customer she had befriended hoping Jack would meet her, had become very close and was devastated over her death. Jack met her when he went to the salon to finalize his mother’s business. He could tell when she came into the salon she was looking for him. He had seen her at the funeral home the day before the funeral but she didn’t come to the funeral. He remembered how she turned and bumped into him as she turned to leave the funeral home. He held her shoulders and saw how devastated she was as she whispered ‘I’m sorry’ and left. She strolled into the office red-eyed and beautiful. He cursed himself for all the time he avoided meeting her. Hello, Ms. Hardison. I’m Jackson Morris, Bev’s son. What can I do for you?
She just put her hands in her gorgeous hair. I’m Sallie and I will call you Jackson. If your mother had her way we’d be married by now. She told me she taught you everything she knew about hair. So, can you do it?
She put her hands under her tresses then lifted them up as her hair cascaded down through her fingers back onto her shoulders.
No! I am a mortician, Sallie and you are very far from dead. I do not do live people’s hair.
He did not want to have the fantasies he was having about Sallie at this moment. He shut his eyes and focused on the task he was here to complete. He could smell her perfume knowing she had moved closer. He opened his eyes as she put her arms around him. He went ahead and wrapped her in his arms.
I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to upset you. I don’t know what I’m going to do. She was a mother to me. I need her. It’s not fair; she was too young.
She fell apart in his arms and he could only cry along with her. He knew how pathetic he was but right now he could care less. He just held her until she was spent.
He took Kleenex and wiped his face then took another one and dabbed her eyes. Are you okay now?
She just stared at him. She was feeling something she had never felt before. How could Bev have known they would connect like this? She could tell he felt it too. He waited patiently for her answer. She nodded. Yes, I needed to let it all out. I feel better now. Thank you. Now, about my hair…
He didn’t want to let her win but he knew she would. You’re spoiled and you always get your way don’t you?
She raised her chin ready to challenge him but he had her dead to right. Okay, you’re right. My brothers indulge me way too much. They told me I’ll have to lower my standards to find a husband. Bev said you’d indulge me.
She lied I’m not doing your hair.
He started to put things away getting ready to leave.
She decided to try another strategy. It’s just as well I can’t stay here in this salon long. Tomorrow I’m taking my niece and nephew to six flags. You need a day away would you like to join us?
He waited before he answered. He wanted to say no again. He knew she had ulterior motives. She was right; He needed to get away. He needed to clear his head. He looked at her standing there waiting. He needed to keep his distance. How old are your niece and nephew?
They’re both six. My brother, B. J. was supposed to go with me but he has to work. I can’t let them down.
She conjured up a smile for him.
I think I’d rather do your hair.
He looked skyward. What could his mother have possibly been thinking?
Great, you can come to my house and do it. You have my address don’t you?
She jumped at the chance to win.
Jack could only laugh. She had conned him. This woman was going to change his life. He had one week unless his partner’s wife went into labor. What could she possibly do in that amount of time? I’ll go to six flags with you and the next day I’ll do your hair. You do know I will be returning home soon? You will have to find another hairdresser.
Who knows; maybe I’ll go with you.
She grinned as she led the way out of the salon. I’ll have breakfast ready at eight tomorrow. You might want to meet those two crazy people before we go. Jackson, you don’t know how much it means to me that you’re here for me. I guess I kind of forced myself on you.
She stopped at her car and looked up at him.
His heart flipped. The sunshine practically made her glow. She was totally beautiful. He looked
