M OLLY WAS SITTING at the kitchen table drinking her morning coffee. The sun was shinning thru the window. She watched the birds pecking the ground thru the window. They were busy scurrying around, when all at once they took off. I wonder what scared them, Molly thought. Maybe the neighbors cat, George. Sure enough here he comes strutting around the corner with a bird in his mouth. I guess the early cat gets the bird, Molly said to herself. Molly was thinking about what she was going to do today when the phone rang. Great, this early in the morning she thought. She reached over and picked it up.

    Hello, answered Molly.

This is the hospital, said the woman, your mother had an aneurysm in her brain we’re not sure if she is going to make it. You need to come right away.

An anuerysm? How could that be? Mom had always been active and healthy. While all the other seniors where running to the doctor every other day and popping drugs for everything from constipation to high blood pressure, mother was busy traveling and playing golf. I guess it just goes to show you, you never know what’s going to happen, she said to herself as she hung up the phone.

Molly didn’t have time to clean up the dishes in the sink. She hurried and turned off the coffee pot. She needed to get to the hospital now. Where are they? She said to herself. There they are right in front of me. She picked up her car keys and headed out the door. It was more than an hour’s drive to the hospital. She started up the car and backed down the drive way.

As she drove down the highway she started to think about all the things her and her mother were going to do. But Molly kept putting it off. She always had something else to do. As she thought about the stuff they didn’t get to do it started to hit her that they may not get another chance to do it. She said a prayer, Lord if you let mother live I promise to do some of the things, when she is better.

Molly thought she would never get there. That seemed like the longest drive in her life. She looked for a space as close to the door as possible. But they were all full. Well I guess this will have to do she said to herself. She parked the car and got out. She hurried across the parking lot. Her steps echoed as she took each step. She felt so alone. She had no one except her mother. She and her sister weren’t close. She couldn’t remember the last time she spoke to her. When she got to the front there was a heavy set woman reading a magazine. The phone was ringing, but she just ignored it. I wonder why I can’t find a job like this she thought to herself. She stood there for a minute but the woman didn’t look up. So she cleared her throat. She looked up with an annoyed look on her face.

Excuse me, I need to know which room my mother is in? said Molly.

What’s her name? she asked some what annoyed.

    Anna Edgare, said Molly.

She’s not here, said the woman.

She went back to reading her magazine. Molly was starting to get agitated.

What do you mean, she’s not here, said Molly raising her voice.

Just what I said, she’s not here, said the woman raising her voice.

How do you know, you didn’t even look, said Molly.

Listen I said she’s not here, so she’s not here, said the woman. "Now if you don’t go I’ll call security.

A doctor was passing by and heard all the commotion. He walked over to the desk to see what the problem was.

What seems to be the problem, he asks.

Molly explains to him about the phone call she got from the hospital about her mother. He tells her he remembers her being brought here to the hospital. He offers to take her to the ICU were her mother is at. He gives the woman behind the desk a dirty look and takes Molly to see her mother. He tells her on the way up there that her mother needs surgery, but refuses to have it. He hopes that Molly can talk her into it. When Molly gets to the ICU she can’t believe how her mother looks. She has tube running out of her everywhere. She stood there staring in disbelief. Finally she slowly walked toward the ICU. She stood next to her mother’s bed.

Hey momma, she said. They say you’re being stubborn.

No, I just don’t want them cutting on me, she said

Momma if you don’t have the surgery they won’t let you leave, said Molly.

They can’t keep me here, she said.

You can’t go home without the surgery, said Molly. Please let them do they’re job.

Molly held her hand and prayed that she would say yes.

Will it stop the pain in my head? she asked.

Yes it will, said the doctor.

He startled Molly. She didn’t know he was standing behind her.

Okay, anything to make the pain go away, she said.

Molly hugged her mother and told her everything was going to be alright. The nurses came in and prepped her for surgery. Molly stayed with her mother until they kicked her out. She told her that she loved her as they wheeled her off to surgery. Molly went to the waiting room. As she sat there it dawned on her that she hadn’t called her sister. She hated to make the call she knew how emotional her sister got. She pulled out her cell phone to call when she looked up and seen a sign, Turn off cell phones. Great she thought. She thought about waiting until mother was out of surgery, but she changed her mind. I need some fresh air anyway she said to herself. As she got up to leave, the door opened to the waiting room. A man walked in. Not just any man. He was tall and well built. Molly decided the phone call could wait. She sat back down. He smiled at her and sat down across the room from her. She couldn’t help staring at him. His smile was contagious. His teeth are so white she thought to herself. And look at his hair. It was jet black and went down a little past his shoulders. He must be a model or something like that she thought. He’s either married or gay. There’s no way someone that good looking could be available. He noticed she was looking at him and smiled. Molly’s face turned bright red. She could feel the heat on her cheeks. She turned her head as if she was looking around the room. But she knew she had been caught. He got up and went over and sat closer to Molly. What if he speaks to me? I won’t no what to say.

Hi, may name is Preston, he said.

    Hi, Molly, she said.

So what’s your story? he said.

Molly gave him a blank stare.

Why are you here? he asked.

Oh, my mother, she answered. She had an aneursym and they’re doing surgery.

    Oh, I’m sorry, he said.

And compassionate too, Molly thought to herself. He’s got to be married. She looked at his hand for a ring but didn’t see one. That don’t mean nothing, some men
