"Here," said Shirley, shoving the candy bar into his hands. She let go quickly as if she didn't trust herself not to take it back. "It has caramel, chocolate, and nuts in it. It's my favorite." The boy carefully opened the candy wrapper and took a tiny bite. He smiled. Shirley smiled too. For the first time since this whole mess had begun, Shirley witnessed a true smile from a stranger.
