About this ebook

When Evans came over, I was enjoying a Chablis on the veranda. I have a penthouse on the shore, just across from Manhattan.

He said that the bank was in order, and that we could expect the transaction to go through in the morning, around eight o'clock.

So it was settled, we were rich, and the world lay open in front of us. Then my lady came in, wearing something she had bought today, and we toasted, on good fortune.

Exuberant evocation of Manhattan and smart people who understand neither their own feelings nor anyone else's, to fine Gershwin. An all time favorite of mine.

Chapter 1

It is true that life is hard, sometimes, and that it may seem difficult to come through with the purpose one has, but in the event that everything seem a catastrophe, don’t despair, help might be just around the corner.

It was in my case, I and a mate called Evans had just come down with the deal of a century. It was like this, Evans had called saying that Downs were up for sale. Downs is a major shipping agent in Boston, and they had run out and were now up for, yeah, a few hundred million, dollars.

So we ventured to buy the operation, stake heart. That made the price go down a fair deal, but that’s business, so.

In the event that there is anything that can go wrong it will, and it did. The first thing that happened was that Evans called and said that the bank was giving us problems.

We investigated the problem, and it turned out that the bank had been threatened by an anonymous source.

Well, that happens. Someone is irregular with the notion that we were going to make money on a deal like this, so we tried around a couple of banks. The Bank of America duped down, then Citibank. Finally an unauthorised ledger from Los Angeles came down with the statement and we were set.

Before we get exited and think that we were hip, it has got to be mentioned that there was a long way yet. The reason the corporation was for sale, was because it had been run down, and when you buy something like that, in a sordid shape, you have to spend a lot of money on getting the thing up again, but we were confident.

Also, if you have problems with the staff, you will have to exchange that and probably fire a lot of people, and then there is confidence, that is the market. A corporation has got to have customers, otherwise it will not make any money, and if the customers have gone away, because they have feared bad service, well, then you have to go and reconstitute the confidence.

The problem is, we are not presidents or shareholders, we are, well, arbiters and so on, but there is professional help.

All in all it looked good.

Chapter 2

So it was settled, we were rich, and the world lay open in front of us. Then my lady came in, wearing something she had bought today, and we toasted, on good fortune.

That was when the doorbell rang.

It was a friend of Evans’. His name was Elby, and he said he had bad news. We stifled a bit, but carried on as if anything so. It was the bank, again, and this time it was more serious.

One of the officials in the ledger that we had used, had been shot, and the ledger had pulled out again.

Damned.

So Evans said that this was probably going to be our demise, this time, but there was nothing else to do but to carry on and then take thing as they rose up in eventuality.

The first thing we were going to do was to transact a gold ledger, from Europe, and then hope that it would carry through, this time, without any more problems.

Of course it was sad that someone had to let their life on our account, but that is money, and there is nothing in the world that will keep people away from the tray, even death.

We said condolences and the Evans picked up the phone and ordered the gold transaction. I asked him if maybe we weren’t in over our heads, now that we couldn’t even procure the corporation without people dying on us everywhere.

Evans took it coldly. He said that if
