    Acknowledgements

I dedicate this book to all the sad, the lonely, the hurting, the abused and the downtrodden—who are tossed to and fro by the raging storms of life. I pray by the grace of Almighty God that they may find refuge under the shadow of His wings! God has a plan and a purpose for every person on Planet Earth. Our destinies are written in His Hand! We are ‘fearfully and wonderfully made’ therefore we are the apples of God’s eye.

Therefore, the Lord Jesus Christ will never leave us friendless, forsaken or forgotten. He was born to bring hope to a dying world. He lived on earth to show us the way out of every despicable situation. He came to die to set us free from the storms of life. He resurrected to prove His power over death and over every storm of life! Our God is able!

I pray that the Lord Who rides the storms will deliver our people and still the storms in their lives.

I also dedicate this book to all counsellors and people involved in the ministry of helps. They sacrifice time and effort to steer the above kind of people through storms by offering wise counsel and spiritual guidance. May the Lord reward them for their excellent service in the Kingdom.

I acknowledge as well, all those who have stood with me through my personal storms in life. As I state in this book, no one is immune from the storms of life. All of us go though torrential periods but few of us are able to weather the storms that come our way! That is why this book is written—for the sole purpose of providing tactics and knowledge of how to overcome storms in our everyday lives.

    Forewords

It always amazes me how many people have survived major attacks from the enemy. To listen to the testimonies of those that have survived such storms in life instils within me a profound sense of respect for their dauntless courage. Such noble courage is the quality we need in order to sustain us when we cannot find support from any other source. Where does one get courage? Who could we go to? As Believers we have the infallible assurance that Job had when he faced his severest of storms—he declared My Redeemer lives! One can only surmise the tremendous faith that he embraced in his scarred and frail body and his tormented mind. Faith in God is the undying element that gives us courage in the most hopeless situations and in the face of most tragic circumstances.

There is something uniquely different about the person who wisely chooses to live the life of faith.

In this book Rising above your Storm Dr Paul brilliantly describes how one can storm-proof his/her life and use the discipline of faith to overcome the challenges thrown at them. Faith lifts us over the realm of our own natural capabilities and makes God’s possibilities come alive in our ‘impossible situations.’ There is an ongoing tension between ‘faith’ and ‘sight.’ Our old nature is at home in the world of senses and it demands tangible evidence—something that can be seen and touched.

As Christians we need to cultivate the new nature which is able to trust God and His Word without demanding evidence.

    Introduction

How should a Believer react when facing a storm? What are the basic steps that a person ought to take in order to still the storm, avoid the storm or go through the storm. In certain instances storms are stilled like in the instance when Jesus rebuked the wind in Matthew 14. Others escape a stormy encounter like David prays in Psalm 55:8: I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest. This is in reference to 2 Samuel 15: 17 where he flees from the wrath and the blood-thirsty mob of his own son, Abssalom. In other instances, people go through storms and emerge victorious like the Apostle Paul in Acts 27.

    FAITH DISPELS FEAR!

Someone said: There is nothing to fear except fear itself! Cape Fear in southern North Carolina (USA) jutting into the Atlantic Ocean received its named, because of the dangerous waters surrounding it. It is an area known for stormy weather. Many ships and lives have perished in these treacherous and stormy waters in this area. A prominent landmark on Cape Fear is its lighthouse. This serves to help steer the ship to safety by avoiding the deadly rocks. We too, as Believers have the Word of God as our Lighthouse that we may use to navigate through violent storms of fear and impending death.

I sought the Lord and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. Psalm 34:4

The blessings contained in the above verse implies that God:

    1.   Answers prayer—We serve a prayer answering God!

    2.   Delivers from all fears—He transforms our mindsets!

    3.   Enlightens His people—He gives us wisdom to cope!

    4.   Gives His people boldness—We obtain courage!

    5.   Saves from all troubles—Every storm is subject to God!
