INTRODUCTION
On a warm summer night in 1981, Joe and I walked confidently up to the craps table at the Hyatt Lake Tahoe Casino. I was relatively new to the game but believed I had figured out how to make great bets and was anxious to show Joe how it’s done.
Some thirty-five minutes later, we were stunned by what had happened at the crowded craps table.
Of the eight or nine players at the $5 minimum table, two shooters
(dice rollers) had rolled the dice continuously for those thirty or so minutes while crapping out
only once. Joe and I were more than $300 ahead. We had resolutely played my system of placing (or betting on) the number 6 and the number 8 at the top of the table. Despite this success, I was troubled by the reaction of the casino employees who were watching the play at our table. The stickman, who controls the dice between rolls at the table, and the pit boss, who watches over several tables from the center of the craps area, had become very interested in the play at our table.
Both the stickman and the pit boss, who had walked up to the table early in the long hand
roll, were smiling and slowly shaking their heads throughout the winning roll. It was as if they knew something no one else knew; they seemed to be enjoying an inside joke.
After it was clear that the dice had turned cold with three quick crap outs for the next shooter, the pit boss smiled and said, Okay, how many millionaires at the table now?
It was at that moment I knew there was a large chunk of information I didn’t have about how to play craps.
Later, we followed the pit boss as he headed for the break room and asked him, What were you thinking during that long roll?
You guys know how rarely a streak like that happens?’ he answered.
It’s too bad you weren’t moving your bets up rather than just buying $6 numbers over and over. He said that without a customer-service smile on his face. Then he went on,
I see player after player miss those short streaks, and others who try to double up as the table goes cold. If you’re going to play with dice, you’d better learn the game, and I’m not just talking about the probabilities of each roll."
