    Chapter 1

The phone rings in the middle of the night. Christina blindly reaches for the phone, knocking over everything in the process. Hello she says in tired and sleepy voice. Christina, yes she replies. Its Max, I have some bad news. Christina sits up in bed and braces herself for the news. Her best friend which whom they have been friends since childhood, an entire lifetime, she has been sick for some time now. Yes what is it max, we are at the hospital now, doctors are in with her now, and there running some test, drawing blood. She wasn’t feeling well so we came here. Vanessa asked me to call you and let you know. Thank you Max, Do they know anything yet. There not sure of anything yet. You know how v is she having them run every test there is he says in a gentle chuckle. Yes I sure do she says in a small whimper. Tell her I am coming, I’ll leave first thing in the morning. Christina hangs up the phone and looks over to her sleeping husband and fights off the river of tears welling up in her eyes. Frightened she wakes him up. Zack she pats him gently, Zack wake up honey. He opens his eyes and sees that she has been crying he asks what is wrong, Its Vanessa she is in the hospital, there running some test, there not sure what it is, I’m scared babe, and I know she hasn’t been doing well to begin with. Zack reaches over and hugs his wife of 30 years. He does his best to comfort her. They lay back down, but she just lies there not able to go back to sleep.

That morning Christina packs a bag, then heads down the hall to the kitchen. She pours herself a cup of coffee and makes her husband breakfast. As she is cooking she smiles a little bit as memories come to mind. She remembers it was Vanessa that introduced her and Zack to begin with. They were neighbors and friends. Her and Vanessa has so much fun as kids. They had literally grown up together. Zack comes in and breaks her concentration. Good morning beautiful. She smiles and says good morning and hands him his breakfast and coffee. What time you leaving baby? Just as soon as I finish packing. Have you herd from max? No he hasnt called. I imagine he has had a long night she says.

I’ll call him from the road. They finish there breakfast. Christina goes to her room to finish packing her bag, hopes in the shower. Zack helps her carry her bag to the car; he wraps his arms around his wife and kisses her softly. I’ll be back in a day or two. Call me when you get in. keep me posted and give her my love. I will she says and then she pulls out of the long driveway. She honks the horn as she turns on the street Zack waves and then heads into the house. He goes and cleans up the mess in the kitchen. Pours him another cup of coffee.

He takes his coffee and heads out to the porch where him and the love of his life would sit every morning and drink there coffee. They would watch the neighborhood kids play, or whatever was going. They would sit and enjoy the warm southern Georgia weather and talk. On this particular morning he was by self, which left him to his thoughts. He recalled they bought this house many years ago, soon after they married. He laughed at the memory of Christina begging saying we have to have this house. I love it we can raise are kids and grandkids coming to visit. Have holidays here can’t you see baby she would say. He laughed and few months later they were the proud owners of a beautiful 3 bedroom home. It has polished wood floors, big kitchen a cozy living room with wood trim. They have been very happy here. They raised their 2 beautiful children here and have the grandkids over often. He is a blessed and happy man. He picks up his coffee takes a sip and lets out sigh. He is going to miss his baby while she is gone. He goes in to the house and heads to the living room. Sits in his favorite chair he has had for many years. (Christina hates the chair). He reaches for the phone off the side table and stops and looks at the picture on it. It was a picture of Christina when they were dating. There she was as beautiful as ever with her long deep red hair, beautiful green eyes that sparkles and dance when she laughs. Pretty fair skin. Man she is the most beautiful woman he has ever meet. He picks up the phone to call his kids to let them know that there Aunt Vanessa was sick and in the hospital, and also to let them know there mom was heading up there to be with her. The first call he made was to his son Zack Jr. Zack Jr was tall athletic with short dark hair and brown eyes. Good looking Italian man He looks just like his father in his younger days. Also like father very successful business man. Considering he is the lead manager at his father’s company. They talked for a few minutes. Give aunt v my love and prayers he says as they hang up. Then the more difficult call was to his daughter Miley. Miley was a mix of both with strawberry blond hair olive skin and has her mother small frame and green eyes. Miley was close with v.

Christina found herself thinking of their childhood days as she drove down the long highway. All those hot summers. And how much fun they would have. I am truly blessed. I have everything I ever wanted. A wonderful man, beautiful children, grand babies, and a sister who has been by side threw it all. She tears up at the last thought. They both grew up in savannah Vanessa moved a few hours away. They still spend every holiday and birthday and as much as the summer as they can together. Theres nothing quite like summer in the south. Southerners know how to have fun Vanessa would always say. Nothing like getting the family and friends together for a nice cook out, sitting around the bond fire having a few drinks and having a good time. Her phone rings and startles her for second as she pulls back from her thoughts. It was Zack calling to see how she was. I’m fine, I’m almost there sweetheart. Should be pulling in less than half hour now. I’m worried about her. I’m sure she will be fine. Well I know she’s more than likely giving that hospital staff hell they both laugh. Vanessa has always been one give people hell, hell on wheels as our mommas would say. I told the kids you would be gone for a few days; they send their love and prayers. Miley got a little choked up. I knew she would. They always had been so close. I know they have he says in agreement. Well baby keep me posted and all when you get there. Ok honey I love you she says as she hangs up the phone. With then the next half hour Christina was pulling into the parking lot of St. John memorial hospital. As she walking in the front doors. Her stomach started to churn, her nerves a wreck. She found the receptionist and asked what room her dear friend was in. Yes mam Vanessa Thomas that’s room 314 ma’am, thank you. Christina heads to the elevator she gets off on the third floor. As she walking down the hall she hears her friend yelling at the staff, well don’t just stand there honey make yourself useful and tell me what it is your
