About this ebook
In Daniel 7:1314 (NIV), the prophet Daniel had a vision in the night. He saw one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations, and men of every language worshiped him.
Who was this son of man, and what were these clouds of heaven? They could have been dark storm clouds of Gods impending judgment or multitudes of heavenly angels. But there is one more cloud that I am the most interested in: a great cloud of witnesses. They can testify to the world who this Son of Man is. He is Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews! (See John 19:19.)
Hebrews chapter 11 is the Bibles Hall of Faith, recounting the names and deeds of all of the mighty saints of the Old Testament. The very next chapter begins with these words: Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us join the cloud (Hebrews 12:1ff., NIV). We also can be a part of this eternal Kingdom of Praise. It includes all peoples, nations, and men of every language who will worship Jesus as their Lord and King.
Let us praise the Lord together, and exalt his name (Psalm 34:3). Hallelujah!

It has to be said at least once that, without my wife’s help, I don’t know if these books would ever have been written. The last three could not have been written in such a short time, that’s for sure. That is because I have a wife who is so young; when I retired five years ago, she just kept on working to support my “habit,” letting me be a full-time author. I can’t thank her enough for doing that for me. (She’ll be a “saint” in heaven someday.) But besides that, I knew nothing about computers. So I had to lean heavily on her expertise, and also the E-mail messages from the publisher she would read to me. Plus she designed most of the covers. And in this book, she even wrote two of the letters to our son and his wife (chapters 12 and 21). And all of that doesn't even include the hours of tireless proofreading and correcting of my mistakes after each book was written. Her “fingerprints” are all over my books. She is definitely “the wind beneath my wings.” I want to give her all of the long-overdue credit that she deserves. The only other ones who deserve more credit for making me an author would be my mentor, Dr. Bob Taussig—and the Lord Himself, of course. You take Him out of my books, and you would end up with a flimsy “flyer” that would never get off the ground! Anything worth accomplishing is never done all alone—just read the credits at the end of your next favorite movie. If any readers need to know more about me, they can just read the “About the Author” pages in my other three books. I have never liked to repeat myself when I’m writing things. (Maybe deep inside, I want to save trees! ...Or more likely, I believe I’m simply all done now, and we’ll just leave it at that.)

Introduction
—August 31, 2010
Dear Family,
Even when I was writing my first two books, Short Courses on Tall Subjects and The Matt and Noelle Letters, I knew that a third one would have to follow. This one has elements of both of the other books. The first one was a collection of favorite lessons that I had taught in the past, and this is also about a favorite subject that I’ve taught many times. The second book told stories of God’s leading in my life, and this one begins with a story as well. However, this time I won’t be using a letter format (except in the introduction), and I won’t mail it to you until it is finished. The others had individual chapters that were each written about a separate topic, but in this case, the entire book is about one subject. But I’m still writing it to you, just like a personal letter.
I attempted to write this book over 35 years ago, in 1975, the year our first child was born. When I first discovered it, I even mailed a letter to Chaplain Carothers, the author of Prison to Praise (my favorite book at the time), suggesting that he should write it. But the only reply was from his organization, telling me where to send donations!
So I launched into it myself, but the book soon became more of a record of my latest discoveries, and it grew to an unmanageable size! In the decades that followed, I’ve accumulated even more information on the subject. But I’ve since boiled it down to only what is most important, and now I won’t get off track. I’ve waited long enough!
There is a verse in the Bible that says, The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever . . .
(Deuteronomy 29:29). And what God revealed to me I want my children to share as well, like part of our family inheritance. It is one of the best things I have to pass down to you, and it will give you true riches, that will be as valuable in heaven as they are in this life. This is the main motivation for all my writing. And it can be passed on to the next generation after you. (You are all in my prayers.)
—Love,
Your Dad.
Chapter 1
An Amazing Discovery
In the summer of 1975, our ship was making preparations for a two month cruise to Australia. Your mom and I had just gotten married the year before, and the Navy had transferred us to Japan, where we had our first beautiful baby girl. Since we were going to be gone so long, she decided to just fly home to Canisteo, New York, to let her parents and relatives see the baby.
Meanwhile, on my side, a long cruise seemed like a good time to begin a new Bible reading program. Someone had given me a Bible for Christmas, and I wanted to read it. It was a new paraphrased version called The Living Bible.
But I was debating where to start reading. I liked New Testament passages like the book of Romans, Philippians, or Hebrews, and was curious what a paraphrased version would do to my favorite verses. But God seemed to be leading me to just start at the beginning, Genesis 1:1. I really wasn’t in the mood—those passages were so familiar, and I wanted something more spiritual,
not just stories. And I remember asking, Can anything spiritual come out of Genesis?
Famous last words!
Another thing you should know, I had been reading all of these books about praise. Chaplain Merlin Carothers was one of my favorite authors, and in a short time he wrote Prison to Praise, Answers to Praise, Praise Works, and Walking and Leaping, and I read each one as fast as they came out. I even bought a whole box of Prison to Praise books for our cruise, and handed them out to anybody on the ship who would take one. So I had praise
on the brain that summer!
As we left port, I began to read. And the first thing I noticed in this new version was the meaning of names. Regular translations put those in the footnotes, where you may never see them, but The Living Bible put it all front and center, right in the verse itself. And as I continued, I got more and more curious, totally fascinated.
When Eve gave birth to her first child, she named him Cain (meaning ‘I have created’). For, as she said, ‘With God’s help, I have created a man’
(Gen. 4:1). What a miracle her first baby must have been! And they still are!
After Abel was murdered by Cain, she had another son named Seth (meaning ‘Granted’); for, as Eve put it, ‘God has granted me another son for the one Cain killed’
(Gen. 4:25). I had never noticed this before.
Lamech called his son Noah (meaning ‘Relief’) because he said, ‘He will bring us relief from the hard work of farming this ground which God has cursed’
(Gen. 5:28). When God changed Abram’s name to Abraham, it meant (‘Father of nations’) . . . I will give you millions of descendants who will form many nations!
(Gen. 17:5). Then Sarah was told to name her baby Isaac (‘Laughter’)
(Gen. 17:19) because, after God announced that she would have a baby when she was 90 years old, she laughed! She just couldn’t help it.
Isaac grew up, got married to a girl name Rebekah, and they had twin boys, Jacob and Esau. Jacob was born with his hand on Esau’s heel! So they called him Jacob (meaning ‘Grabber’)
(Gen. 25:26). It also meant Deceiver,
and he later tricked Esau out of both his birthright and his blessing. But then, after Jacob wrestled with an angel, God changed Jacob’s name to something more honorable: Israel—one who has power with God. Because you have been strong with God, you shall prevail with men.
(Gen. 32:28). And Jacob’s twelve sons became known as the children of Israel.
So finally I arrived at Genesis chapter 29. Jacob married two sisters, and he loved Rachel more than Leah, because she was more beautiful. But this set off a rivalry between the sisters, and they competed with each other to see who could bear the most sons to Jacob. For a while, Rachel couldn’t have children, and Leah had the early
