Chapter 1
Childhood
Well, where can I start? Back in the days growing up in the Desire Housing Projects, there were these two adolescent kids by the name of Mark and Marshall. These two guys were distinguished and stood out from the rest of the kids. Now don’t get me wrong, there were a lot of smart and bright kids, with lots of potential. These kids all had the potential of being something one day. One must take into account the environment these kids live in on a daily basis. The Ninth Ward’s Desire Projects was a place where murders took place almost every day. There was not only crime and violence, but the two came from a part of town where families did not have much and they struggled to make ends meet. Even facing poverty and adversity, their families managed to make it. This book will show you how these two young men and childhood friends rose above the obstacles and overcame becoming a product of their bad environment. Many of their friends did not make it. Some of them ended up on drugs, going to jail and even went to an early grave. They relied on a true bond, friendship, faith in God a will and determination to become somebody one day.
Mark: What’s up Marshall, hey man are you going to practice today? Marshall: Yeah, but I have to hurry up and finish my homework first. Mark: Man you should have done that in class, like I’ve been doing so you wouldn’t have to rush to finish for practice. You can just take your time in class. Marshall: I know man that’s what I usually do I was just tripping today messing around with Patrice. Anyway dog, I’ll be there. I shouldn’t be too late. Mark: Alright buddy I’ll see you at practice.
It was about 3:30 pm on a beautiful sunny afternoon in the neighborhood park. The park was called The Great Sampson Park. Sampson Park was a place where a lot of true athletic stars were born and a lot of young men were molded and reared to tough young men. Sampson Park kept a lot of us out of a lot of trouble because of the activities that was offered to us at the park. There were football, basketball and baseball teams. If it wasn’t for that park, I seriously don’t think that I would be alive today to write this book. Now let’s get back to the script. Coach Rabbit: Bruno, you’re late! Give me two laps. Where’s Marshall? Mark: Umm, umm he said he would be a few minutes late. Oh, there he is crossing the neutral ground (A neutral ground is small patch of a grassy area in the middle of the street). As Marshall crossed the neutral ground Mark pointed him out to coach. Coach Rabbit: Hurry up Marshall. You and Bruno give me two laps. You guys are the captains of the team. You should be setting a good example for the rest of the team. Don’t let it happen again. Alright coach, replied Mark and Marshall. The two boys finished a full day of practice. Their team was known as Pop Warners Little League Athletes. As their athletic careers began to evolve who would have known that one of the two would make it as a star athlete, go onto be an MVP player and later be inducted into Football Hall of Fame. During this time the two guys attend different schools and have not seen much of each other. They both continue to live in the same neighborhood and remain true to their dreams as athletes. The two are reunited years later as they enter high school.
Chapter 2
The Beginning
The beginning, four years later. Mark and Marshall were still the best of friends. No longer little boys, now the two have grown to be two respectable young men. They have developed a reputation as athletes. Something was special about the boys, they had charisma. They had a certain way of dressing, people knew that they were athletes and they were adored by the girls as well as the school staff. Everyone knew that they were destined for greatness. The young men have now reached their freshmen year. Everybody could feel it. Mark and Marshall had special talents. Who would have imagined, these two guys would make it out of the hood. These guys were up against a lot of odds. Their environment did not change, but these guys were being developed as athletes in the middle of the hood. In the midst of it all, the two guys had an agreement. They always believed that one of them would make it out of the hood. So there it was the agreement. If one made it out of the hood, he would be the one to help the other bring him and his family out of the hood. They depended on each other to bring about a brighter future for their families.
Likewise, the guys shared almost everything. Journey with me as the story unfolds. Marshall: What’s up Iya? Mark: What’s up man? Can you believe we are going to be freshmen in high school? Marshall: Yeah man we’re getting up there. Next thing you I know we’re going to be seniors and graduating and going on to college. Mark: I know man. I can’t wait for those days to come either. I already have my mind made up. I’m going straight to Georgetown on a Basketball Scholarship. Next, straight to the Pro’s. I see it now New Jersey Nets selects Mark Bruno number one pick in the draft. Marshall: Yeah man you got big dreams. That’s good, you know ya boy is behind you one hundred percent. But for now Spud Web, let’s just get out of high school. Mark: You’re right. Man don’t hate, I gotcha. Speaking of dreams, what are your plans for the future? Marshall: Well to tell you the truth man, I haven’t really thought about it. There is one thing I do know, I would like to make my momma proud by going to college and graduating with a degree. I want my momma to have things she has never had. I just hate to see my momma struggling all the time. Always going to or coming from work. I am going to make that change for my mother. She deserves better. Mark: I feel you dog. I am right there with you. I want the same for my moms too. Well you still have time, I mean; we still have time to figure it all out. We still have a whole life ahead of us. Who knows what the future holds. Marshall: And you’re right. The two guys are now sitting on the front porch, where they spent most of their time. They were looking into a glimpse of their future. They both had dreams of an athletic career. They knew that this would be their ticket out of the hood. They knew their families could have and live better. They were going to make it happen.
The Front Porch
They were dreaming big. But just as hard as they dreamed, they worked even harder. Now, these guys were not just athletes, they also learned how to hustle. Hustle, I don’t mean anything illegal. Now, everybody in the hood had some kind of
