PART ONE
Paola
Paola looked at herself in the mirror for the hundredth time, that royal tailor had not done what she had asked with this outfit. It did not sit on her as well as it should, well as she liked her clothes, being seventy did not mean she had to look seventy-seventy two actually. Age was something Paola tried not to think about in terms of getting old, but rather in terms of how not to age. She turned sideways and her completely grey hair caught the rays of the late afternoon sunlight. She tilted her head forward then back again, every strand falling back into place. Perfect hair, perfect face, that rice powder did work-but wrong outfit for the occasion.
Lana!
Yes your majesty,
responded a voice quickly just outside her doorway.
I don’t like the way this dress sits on me. I am meeting my daughter in law today; well hopefully she is the one. Anyway I need to look beautiful what do you suggest?
Well ma’am, the new yellow gown brings out your skin tone,
Lana replied.
Bring it then, I have to look like a queen.
Yes your majesty
Lana retreated into the other room, which was completely devoted to the queen’s clothes and accessories. Lana had been aide to the queen since she was 16, that was 47 years ago, nearly five decades serving her queen and she did not regret it one bit. The royal palace of Kimora was her home and the two princes were as much her own as they were Paola’s. Since the death of the king four years back, she had become the queen’s best friend. She quickly sought out the dress in question and returned to help Paola dress. When Paola stood in front of the mirror again she had a smile on her face, exactly as everything was supposed to be, perfect. She preened and pruned herself for a few more minutes, added some scent to her wrists then went downstairs to check on the meal being prepared. As she entered the kitchen, she bumped into her younger son who looked like she had not seen civilisation in days.
Your majesty!
Achaia said giving a bow. Paola cringed inside. She simply did not understand why Achaia could not call her mother. He had always been distant with her. Right then, she really missed her husband. He had known how to deal with Achaia like no one else could. She could almost hear his voice saying, He isn’t Yannick dear, and he is just not an affectionate child
. She smiled to herself as she thought of her older son, he was such a darling, he was . . .
I just returned from the camping, I hear Yannick’s girlfriend is coming over today
, Achaia broke her reverie and she was abruptly thrown back into reality.
Yes, would you like to join us? I did not know what time you would return but I would love to have you there
I have met her before, but I will inform you if I can make it
, he replied as he picked an apple from the fruit bowl in front of him and walked out of the kitchen. Paola looked at him for a while then decided to focus on the task at hand. Just as she was perfect about her image, Paola expected perfection from her servants and they delivered-most of the time. After making sure everything was being made to her specifications, she went to look for the butler.
Noah, when Yannick and his visitor arrive, bring them to the drawing room please.
Yes your majesty
, Noah replied with a bow. Paola left for the drawing room where she poured herself some water in a wine glass—she made a point to watch her alcohol intake, not that it was ever much. She carefully settled herself into an armchair, making sure not to crease her dress. She smiled as she sipped water. Her baby could be getting married. However, there was a hint of sadness in her smile. Out of all the royals, the noble families, Yannick had chosen an ordinary girl. Such was the temptation to title her a peasant but since the girl was going to be, well most likely to end up as a royal, she had to kindly forget that term. If only, Paola sighed. She was getting old, as much as she hated to admit it, it was a fact and looking pretty was not going to protect her from dying, least of all from old age. Yannick had been her miracle child. After a miscarriage and a stillbirth, rumours had begun to fly that the queen was cursed. Those had been dark times. Times when she both hated and loved being married to the king of Kimora. Hated it because the entire court had their eyes on her. She was supposed to produce an heir to the
