THE US MEDICAL SYSTEM
To become a full-fledged physician, you must understand the steps that lead to your chosen profession. This will give you a general idea about the process that prospective students must go through before they become doctors. Specific educational training and standard examinations are among the requirements for becoming a physician. My first step will be to introduce you to these.
The United States requires a lengthy series of educational steps for would-be physicians. They include undergraduate courses, medical school, and graduate medical education. I will outline the educational steps necessary to practice as a physician as well as the examination requirements:
Undergraduate Education (Four years): You will spend four years of college completing your degree in what is commonly known as a premed program. At the end of four years, in addition to any thesis work that your college requires, you will prepare for and take Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).
Medical School (Four years): The first two years consist of basic science, and the last two years consist of clinical rotations at hospitals affiliated with your medical school. Upon completion of medical school, you earn the title of Doctor of Medicine (MD). Your journey does not end here. You must enter residency training before being allowed to practice on your own as a physician.
There are 126 accredited medical schools in the United States. Medical schools receive their accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
Residency (3-7 years): Your chosen specialty will dictate the amount of time required to complete the residency. In general, residencies for primary care specialties, family practice, internal medicine, etc. are shorter than those for other specialties that are more invasive (surgery). This educational phase is known as graduate medical education. After completing medical school, you will participate in a residency program that could last between three and seven years. This professional training is conducted under the supervision of assigned physician educators. Your chosen specialty will dictate the amount of time required to complete the residency.
In the United States, there are approximately 5,000 residency programs in about 1,700 hospitals. Initial selection to a residency program is possible through the National Residency Matching Program (NMRP). Residency programs receive their accreditation from the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Examination Requirements
Many books discuss the Graduate Medical Examination in great detail and offer strategies on how to pass it. Some valuable titles are listed in the resource section at the end of this book. This section is intended to give you a general idea about the examination schedules and the materials covered. These are the examination requirements that
