    Introduction

During the last general elections in Nigeria, I still remember vividly the events that happened to me when I started writing articles about politics. A lot of people wrote to me out of genuine concern. They told me I shouldn’t get involved in politics. Many others said point blankly that as a Pastor, I should face my calling.

But one thing I’ll like you all to know is that whenever any issue at all affects God’s children, God is concerned as well. He is deeply concerned about the affairs of men on earth. And that is why I’ll not stop talking about issues that are keeping the children of God in bondage, needy, beggarly and poor. I’ll keep at it until God’s children are delivered.

We are all affected by money, no matter who we are or where we live or what we do. Money, like time, is a common denominator we share. Most people used the money to buy food this morning, which is necessary to sustain life, so they are intertwined whether we choose to believe it or not.

The money will affect your life. My theory is that if something is going to affect your life, it’s best to know as much as you can about it, most especially, God’s take on such matters. That’s why I’m glad you picked up this book.

For you, this book may be about looking at old ideas and possibly finding new ideas for wealth. It may also be about a paradigm shift in your life. It may be about a transition as radical as the shift from the Industrial Age to the Information Age. It may be about defining a new financial path for your life. It may be about thinking more like a businessperson and investor rather than an employee living from paycheck to paycheck.

Nevertheless, it will be very important for me to state clearly that this is not a get rich quick sort of write up. This is not one of those seven ways to make a million dollar tomorrow morning. This is also not about that miracle money thing most Christians expect today. This is not another book that is out to fuel your lottery mentality about wealth creation.

«No matter how great the talent or efforts, some things just take time. You can’t produce a baby in one month by getting nine women pregnant.»

    – Warren Buffett

Although, the time it will take you to achieve your financial goal is not something I’ll be able to state categorically. That depends solely on you. Meanwhile, if you diligently follow and obey the principles laid out in this book, sooner or later you’ll get to your promise land. You will be able to start from where you are with what you have. You will also realize the potential of little and God’s take on faithfulness to the little things.

I know we live in a world today where our oatmeal is ready to eat in 60 seconds, our prescription lenses are ready to be picked up in 60 minutes, and our house can be built in 60 days. We are a culture that is used to getting what we want instantly. We aren’t used to working patiently, or waiting on anything – even a hamburger.

What we want today is the much more without the very little. We want the tip without the toil, the gain without the grind, the sweets without the sweat, the prize without the pain, and the perks without the perseverance. Today, duty, diligence, hard work, and attention to details are a rare commodity in any endeavor – whether it be at home, at work, or at church.

As you read through you will come to terms and fully understand why the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. More importantly, you will get to understand «Why God takes from those who don’t have and give to those who already have much?»

    So, let’s get started!

For The Love of God, Church, and Nation

    Chapter 1.

    God Thinks Differently

    Chapter 1

    God Thinks Differently

The one problem money cannot eradicate – is poverty. The problem with throwing money at the issue of poverty is that money only creates more poor people and keeps people poorer longer.

«You can’t get rid of poverty by giving

    people money.»

    – P. J. O’Rourke

Unfortunately, very early in my life, and I’m pretty sure I’m not alone in this, I’ve always thought and wished that my rich relatives or the government will have pity on me some day and bring me some huge amount of money to solve all my financial problems.

I’ve always wondered why the rich keep on getting richer. It wasn’t fair to those of us that are poor, and have barely anything to call our own living in the same country where the rich guys are getting richer. Why are they always increasing in wealth? Why can’t some of their money be shared among the poor as well? This was my thinking those days. And a lot of people are still thinking that way.

In the village where I grew up, most of us were very poor. So each time we see the rich and affluent in the society, we always thought that life is not fair to us. And life isn’t fair in general. In fact, I even came to a conclusion then that God wasn’t fair too.

Come to think of it, if God were to be fair why should people like Aliko Dangote, the richest man in Africa according to Forbes, or his brother Dantata and a handful of others have all they could ever need while the rest of us languish in poverty and lack? Why do they have many houses and I live in a village with just about forty huts? Why do they drive expensive cars and the rest of us couldn’t even afford a pair of shoes? Needless to mention, while their children school in the best institutions around the world, the rest of us have to walk kilometers on foot to some thatched hut schools. To me, this is an injustice, and it’s not fair.

I mean, how many houses can they live in at a time? How many cars can they ever drive in their lifetime? Do you want to tell me God doesn’t see all these things happening? Then why will God allow them to have so much and the rest of us barely have enough to survive? I guess you will agree with me that God is truly not fair in this case?

In my honest and sincere opinion, God was supposed to go to those people who have too much money and command them to share their wealth with the rest of us who have little. Wouldn’t this be the logical thing to do? This was my thought when I was growing up in Nigeria. I’ve always thought money will solve all my financial problems. But I was totally wrong! Money cannot eradicate poverty. Money is not a solution to poverty. And if you are still thinking this way, this book is especially for you, because you are in for financial education.

    The Entitlement Mentality

Well, I lived in that country for the first nineteen years of my life, and do you think anything of such ever happened? Certainly, God never answered that prayer. The irony is that instead of the rich to become poor like the rest of us, they only got richer and increased their asset base. And I’ll be showing you the reason why God allows such in the course of this book.

Many people are poor because they operate with this mentality – the entitlement mentality. And if you are one of those who has always thought or still operates with this mentality as I did many years ago, then you are reading the right book. This is because it takes a ton of education to change that perception and that is what this book is all about.

It is a very common practice for people to feel that those in authority or those that are successful owe them something. This kind of thinking can be seen in many situations. A good, but an extreme example would be the beggar on the street who feels that because you are driving a nice car, you should give him something for a meal.

Coming closer to many people’s experience, another example would be the relative who feels that because you are well educated and have a good job, you should take over his responsibility of seeing one or two of his children through school.

While there is absolutely nothing wrong with the rich helping the poor, everything is definitely wrong with the poor expecting and feeling entitled to get something for nothing.

«Smart, well-meaning people get it wrong when they start believing that the world owes them something and that the rules are different for them.»

    – Guy Kawasaki

Our dependence on the donor community is one area where we often feel entitled to the point of irrationality. We expect donors to give us resources to take care of many of our problems. But are we trying to raise these resources ourselves? Is there no form of enterprise we can undertake that would give us the required resources? Yes, the donors have money, but it’s their money. They are free to give it to whomever they please. What is required is not always more donor funding, what is required is more self-reliance and initiative gotten when you are financially intelligent.

Are you erroneously thinking that the world owes you something? Are you looking to others to do something for you rather than focusing on what you can do for yourself? The only person that is responsible for getting you what you want in life is yourself. The entitlement mentality of thinking someone owes you something is one that you should not have.

The problem of the entitlement mentality is so far reaching that even countries like the United States are facing massive problems because of it. Their health-care and pension systems are under enormous strain. They simply cannot afford to pay for all the people that are on these programs.

The fact that a country as developed as the United States should fall into such a trap of promising its citizens it will take care of them in their old age and when they need health care and failing to deliver on it should be a lesson to every country and individual in the world.

You cannot depend on the government to take care of your every need. You cannot depend on that rich uncle of yours to take care of all your needs. You cannot depend on the successful business owners in your community to share all their wealth with you simply because you decide to stay poor. Rid yourself of this entitlement mentality and get the necessary financial education you need.

«Don’t go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing.

    It was here first.»

    – Mark Twain

It is far better to empower yourself and to be able to take care of your needs in every way possible. But that is hardly what anyone wants to hear. Everyone wants an easy way out. Everyone wants someone else to take care of them and sort out their problems. This calls for a change of thinking at all levels.

    The Sad Reality

I’m afraid we have developed an entitlement mentality as a people. And I’m not talking about just the poor people. Too many people, from the politicians, middle-class employees, and professors on down, expect a pension from the government. Of a truth, I really wish these financial problems could be solved. We could ask the rich to pay for everyone, but would it solve the problem? And for how long would it even solve the problem?

The sad reality is that even if you give the poor man a billion US dollars, I bet you that in no time the money will return to the rich. In fact, that is if that money doesn’t kill him. The sad reality is that money cannot eradicate poverty.

I often hear a lot of people say, «When I make a lot of money, my money problems will be over.» In reality, new money problems would just be beginning. One of the reasons so many newly rich people suddenly go broke is because they use their old money habits to handle new money problems.
